Creative but unpolished

This is a quick and entertaining read with lots of typos and grammar errors. It reads a bit like a fairy tale where everything gets neatly wrapped up so the main characters can live happily ever after. The author has clever creative ideas but needs a copy editor to clean up the finished edition.

I read the first and thought it warranted reading the second installment. The romance is overly cute and tedious. Too many quirks, the hermaphrodite, the neurologically damaged rescue cat, etc. It is not unique to this book but I am getting tired of the super-hacker buddy who gets into all files easily. It's getting to be the deux ex machina of mystery and thriller novels.

Really enjoyed the first book, this one not so much.

I really enjoyed the first book, so I jumped right into the second book which really is a clear continuation.

The story itself was fine. I got into this series because it was advertised as a Mystery Thriller. There was way too much content focused on the developing love between Sam and Indy.

Way too much. It's like the author needed to fill in space after the story was written so he went back and detailed puppy love as a filler. If the trend continues in book three, I promise you I won't finish it.

I do like Mr. Archer's writing style, the books are easy to read,and so far the stories have been well thought out and believable.

That's important to me.

About the Author
Sam Siewert (Erie, CO) is a principal engineer and an adjunct professor at the University of Colorado at Boulder where he teaches Real-Time Embedded Systems in the department of Electrical and Computer Engineering. He has worked on hard real-time systems for more than 12 years as a contractor to NASA for deep space and astronautic systems and more than 5 years in the telecommunications and storage systems industry. Sam received his BS in Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering from the University of Notre Dame and his Ph.D. in Computer Science from the University of Colorado at Boulder.

Very practical and interesting.

The code on the CD itself is well worth the money! I like the author's apporach of balancing the real time theory and its application. Having worked with C++ and real time application in the past 10 years, this book tought me something that I didn't learn from anywhere else (RMA, VxWorks, Video driver...). For any serious hard real time application developers, this book is highly recommended!

One of the rare works on the 'eliterian' VxWorks RTOS. The teaching style from the University of Colorado a real gem !

Source code examples cover most of the VxWorks API's.

About the Author
William Wells Brown (1816-1884) was a prominent abolitionist lecturer, novelist, playwright, and historian. Born into slavery in the Southern United States, Brown escaped to the North, where he worked for abolitionist causes and was a prolific writer. Brown was a pioneer in several different literary genres, including travel writing, fiction, and drama, and wrote what is considered to be the first novel by an African American.

Eyewitness to the history of slavery

This is a workmanlike treatment of a subject that is a hardly imaginable foundation of early America: slavery.
It’s more a documentary than any modern understanding of a novel. Brown does a good job of character development for a limited cast of characters, including Clotel, the “mulatto” daughter of a black slave mother and a white father. The story of many aspects of slavery—disruption of families, cruelty of masters, the abolition movement, the economic importance of slave-based agriculture and production, the moral, philosophical and political debates about the “peculiar institution”—is written in a style that is manifestly journalistic and prosaic, not literary.
Clotel is a high impact read. Brown was born a slave in Kentucky circa 1818. He escaped, became an abolitionist and a writer in England, and was purchased by friends and freed in the middle of the 19th century. He published Clotel in 1853 as the first “novel” written by a black American.
It isn’t good reading. It’s harsh reading. It’s a terribly candid condemnation of a despicable fact of American history. It’s a catalog of shame and endurance and human spirit.
By the way, the subtitle acknowledges Brown’s unabashed reference to the story, well known in the mid-19th century, that Thomas Jefferson dallied with his slave, Sally Hemings, and had children with her.
Here are a couple items:
Prof. Cashin notes: “Historians estimate that perhaps 10 percent of the four million slaves living in the South in 1860 had some white ancestry” (p. xiii). Too many white owners forced themselves on their female slaves. In some parts of the South, a person with white lineage except for a black great-great-great-great grandmother could legally be sold as a slave.
Brown underscores the hypocrisy of slave owners who professed political, philosophical or religious convictions that were nominally opposed to slavery. For example, Brown states that in the middle of the 19th century, more than 660,000 slaves were owned “by members of the Christian church in this pious democratic republic” (p. 187).

So, I ordered the Kindle Voyage since school starts in 2 weeks. Just tried to open my textbooks on the Kindle Voyage. The Kindle doesn't even support them. How exactly am I supposed to access my textbooks??? Uggh!

About the Author
Phil Simpson is Altera’s senior manager for software technical marketing and product planning. In this role, Simpson is responsible for Altera’s Quartus II software and third-party EDA interfaces product planning and the creation of the Altera design flow software roadmap. Prior to joining Altera in 1996, Simpson held several engineering roles at various EDA and semiconductor companies, including EDA Solutions, Data I/O and Lucas Aerospace. Simpson holds a BS (with honors) in Electrical & Electronic Engineering from City University, London and an MSC (with distinction) in system design from the University of Central England, Birmingham, England.

Why is that everything that Ms McTaggart does is so commercially oriented?

The author Lynne has also a series of web sites that seem more commercial than altruistic. If you read the book, it poses an interesting idea about human intentions; however, if you visit Mrs. McTaggart web sites, you notice that the only intentions she has is for you, her captive audience, to sell you her products. I don't want to sound mean or rude, but I have a question that many people who I try to convince to join her blog tell me about her books (specially this book) and other products she sells. The question I asked Mrs. Taggart was:

Why are all your web sites so commercially oriented? That is one of the first things that "hit" you when you go to any of your web sites and some people (professionals such as doctors, engineers, architects, psychiatrists, psychologists, and scientists) that I know point that out to me. They tell me that you have an ulterior motive. Can this be true? That you have an hidden agenda besides your altruistic intention experiment ???

Well, it seems that in the surface, this is true. All of your websites sell books, WDDTY magazines, seminars and lectures, and the only thing that is for free is this blog.

Don't get me wrong, I know that you need to sell stuff to maintain the web sites and provide food in your table, but must you be so blatant about your commercial intentions in all of these web sites?

My colleagues are not impressed. They argue that your "Intention Experiment" is more of an exercise in mercantilism and a "Commercial Intention Experiment" than anything else.

Another problem is that my colleagues see is that she sells seminars or courses about a theory on "Intention". How can anyone teach about a theory and then sell the courses? Mrs. McTaggart you are a journalist NOT a scientist, psychologist or sociologist to be teaching something which is in the fringes of science! With all due respect ma'am, what are you going to teach? Are you going to teach to focus on an Intention to see whether it comes true and then charge for this "revelation" as if it were a graduate university class? You are basing your understanding on a theory called "the law of attraction", which is nothing more than speculation and hasn't been proven. So, what will you really be teaching here - an idea, a speculation ? Or do you have, as my dear colleagues think, an ulterior motive to make a buck ?

In all honestly, be careful of charlatans, speculators, and con artists that try to sell you pseudo science.

About the Author

Tracy Hickman is a bestselling fantasy author best known for his work on Dragonlance, as a game designer and coauthor with Margaret Weis, while he worked for TSR. In all, Hickman wrote more than thirty novels in collaboration with Weis. He lives with his wife, Laura, and their four children.

It's a new chapter in the Batman legacy.

Tracy Hickman you have taken the Batman legacy and added a completely new chapter to it. The genius of the back story, mystery and intricate detail kept me reading even when I should have been doing something else. I couldn't put it down. I loved the way you included so much of the Batman history that we all know and love. Well done, Tracy.

Clumsy

Let me start by saying that Hickman is a good writer. I have read other works by him and they have been good. This is why it is so surprising how this book was written.
As any beginning writer knows description should not be added in place of plot, and yet that is exactly what Hickman does in this book. He uses a lot of unnecessary description (describing things that have no apparent purpose in the story) instead of giving us the action that a book like this demands.
It should have been so easy to please the reader. It is a story about Batman and all Hickman needed to do was write about Batman solving a mystery (here the mystery of who his father really was) and fighting some people along the way and we would be happy. Instead he stops in the middle of an action scene to tell us about Batman's bionic armor; useful information - maybe, necessary to interrupt a fight scene for - no.
If Hickman would have taken the time and thought about it, he could have easily found much better ways to give us the information about Batman's new armor or a more concise way to tell us about the Batmobile than 4 pages of pure description with no action or relevance to the story that the reader can see at the moment. It really feels like the Hickman wrote this book for the money and not the story.
If you want a good pre-origin story Keven J. Anderson did one about Krypton that was decent.
Wayne of Gotham is worth reading if you are a hardcore Batman fan but you will find yourself trudging through the pages. Batman should not be laborious to read it should move fast with a lot of action and mystery.
Also Hickman does have a very limited knowledge of who or what Batman exactly is. It is ok to reimagine a character, but you really should study who he is before you change him into who you think he could be.

New twists and old Foes

I admit I'm not an avid comic reader/ fan. That being said, this book is a really good ride. It has everything a good Batman story should have, cool gadgets, crazy villains (many famous ones making a cameo in the book)and Batman having to out think his opponent while trying to come to terms with the dark legacy his father left him. The gripping final confrontation will have you reading under the covers until the early morning hours. This book weaves an amazing tapestry, twisting the threads of past and present of the Wayne family into a colorful and startling picture. Highly recommend for fans and non fans alike. Loved it!
