About the Author

Sharon Oviatt is well known for her extensive work in educational interfaces, human-centered interface design, multimodal and mobile interfaces, and communications interfaces. She has been recipient of a National Science Foundation Special Creativity Award for pioneering work on mobile multimodal interfaces, and first place recipient of the Ina Coolbrith Award. She has published over 130 scientific articles in a wide range of venues in the computational, learning, and cognitive sciences. She is an Associate Editor of the main journals and edited book collections in the field of human interfaces, including The Human-Computer Interaction Handbook. She was a founder of the International Conference on Multimodal Interfaces (ICMI), which became an annual ACM-sponsored international conference series under her guidance. In 2007, she founded Incaa Designs (http://www.incaadesigns.org/), a Seattle-area nonprofit that researches, designs, and evaluates the impact of innovative new educational interfaces.

Must read for all interested in user-centered interface design

Computers have only been around for a few decades. We spend so much time on various computer devices, yet we don't spend nearly as much time analyzing how these devices affect our brain on a short- and long-term basis. Many schools are willing to add entire computer labs without thinking about the impact of these technologies in educational settings. I was happy to find that this book addresses these questions. The Design of Future Educational Interfaces presents a number of studies that describe how the affordances of various computer interfaces can impact how students learn. Get this book, it is a must read!!!!

I was able to read this book while it was still in its final draft form during an undergrad class. It is one of the most informative books I have read in this field and in fact, I continued to reference it throughout my graduate courses. The book is straight forward and explains concepts with many examples. I would suggest it for anyone who is interested in learning about this exciting field or creating their own educational interface. The book would also be good for educators who want to understand how to leverage different interfaces in their classrooms.

Life, to the nth degree, is not fair

As might be expected for a book written in so short a time, it is uneven. But the better parts are among the best ever written about World War II. I repeat, the best, the best, the best.

Lacks clarity and failed to engage

I know this book is extremely popular with many but for the life of me I couldn't understand why.

Carter served with C Co, 1st battalion, 504th PIR from Africa and into Germany. He wrote his account straight after the war, though his brother completed the editing due to Carters death from cancer in April 1947. This is not a memoir in the same sense as most others, it is more of a novel, though Carter writes in the first person. It is also primarily the story of his platoon too, rather than his own story.

Carter jumps into Sicily, his unit being the one which was heavily fired upon by allied ships. There is a little combat but most is in Italy, starting with Salerno and ending with Anzio. Two thirds of the book are about his time here. Following Italy he participates in Market Garden and the Bulge where he is wounded. His account stops here but his brother adds that he returned to his unit before the end, returning to the US in June 1945 (he'd have had a lot of points!).

As I've said above, this is not the standard memoir. There is virtually nothing about Carters background, training or his personal thoughts. It is essentially a platoon's story as seen through the eyes of the men. Carter refers to most by nickname and I felt that this had the effect of limiting my connection with them. Some of this was to disguise identities, some characters being amalgams. Much of what is written is about non-combat antics. There's lots of fist fighting each other, stealing booze or being bizarre in some way. It seemed caricatured to me. I found it hard to recognise these soldiers. They seemed so different to those in the other memoirs I've read. There is a lot of slang which is Ok but many printing errors, random numbers etc, which is not.

Choosing to write in this style is problematic for me. The combat is distant and impersonal. Carter barely writes about his own actions. For much of the book I thought he was a medic. Almost everything is told through the actions of the others. He won the Silver and Bronze Stars but never mentions what he did to earn these. Others have done the same of course but here we know so little of Carter to start with. Indeed, the most revealing material is provided by his brother in the epilogue. I suspect, like others, he has primarily written to commemorate his comrades. There is the flavour of combat, attitudes to `Krautheads' and sadness at comrades lost but it is somewhat removed and didn't have the same clarity and impact as most memoirs have. This said, there is a real emotional punch in the last few chapters.

Carter was a well educated man and a fair writer and he clearly deliberately chose to portray his story in this particular way.. It's an angle that doesn't really appeal to me but given the author's experiences and his prompt recording of them, it must reflect the nature of small group combat in an accurate way. (Someone suggested that he himself is actually the `Arab'). I think his intention was to convey the rough atmosphere of a combat platoon as he had seen it. If so, he does this well enough but I'm not sure it will work for all modern readers. Though there are many battles described, the exchanges between the men seemed to dominate the text. Some of the combat stories recounted seemed a bit like urban legends but perhaps this only appeared so because Carter wrote so very little about his own actions that he seemed more observer than participant. My recommendation - Of some interest.

Like it says for Engineers...

I'm an Electronic and Computer Systems Engineer, but in my spare time I like to do Mathematics, specially Real & Functional Analysis, I didn't go to any formal courses, but thanx to this book I had the possibility to learn these abstract subjects, now the part that I like most is to analyze proofs in any other subject of Mathematics dissecting their steps using what is taught in this book. I have, I thing, all the other books that talk about proofs, but for me this is the best.

P.S.:
This book works for Mathematicians too.

The author provides some good foundational basics for understanding how proofs work

I think this is the only book you should consider first when looking at how mathematical proofs are constructed and read. It is very clearly and fluently written. At the inner covers the various proof technique's main points are illustrated for quick reference, which comes very handy when you want to look up a proof techique without going into its details. This book contains all the important proof techniques you may require in your life as a student.
The main point of this book, of course, is to teach you how to write proofs by yourself by showing you how to construct and to disentangle dense written proofs. It is not enough to learn to write a proof, it also essential to know how to approach dense, compact wirtten proofs in order to learn from them. This one is the essential guide to mathematical proofs out there. I hope you enjoy it

Great way to quiz yourself on the instrumentation,i would've like the book to have more information about the types of tissue instruments are used on. I find this book to be very good regarding the basic instruments it contains. It's photo's are excellent, instrument descriptions precise, and it covers alot of basic instruments for the basic OR services. However, it only covers basic plus some, instruments. If you are looking for a book that covers the majority this is not it. It IS however, a very good book for beginners.

About the Author

I hope you can handle the truth about baseball

Bill Deane has spent more than two decades digging into baseball history, and this fascinating book is the end result. Tackling nearly 100 myths from the origin of the game, to the development of umpires' signals, to the integration of the major leagues, to the role of the modern bullpen closer, he takes nothing for granted and accepts nothing that cannot be documented. There's something for everyone here--from the casual fan who wonders whether Babe Ruth really did "call his shot" before his famous 1932 World Series home run, to the aficionado who wonders whether it really is more dangerous to slide head-first. Some of Deane's answers are statistical, others anecdotal, some simply a matter of letting us know just because a hundred announcers have told us that a certain event happened, it may not necessarily be true. You will be surprised, entertained, and most of all enlightened about the real history of our favorite sport.

The truth behind baseball myths

Bill Deane explores these questions and more. Deane has a wealth of experience in baseball research, and is gifted at being able to put words to baseball's stories. Here, Deane has done it again in this book that takes the reader to the facts behind many of the game's myths. You will surely enjoy the truth behind many of baseball's famous questions, and you just may find that the Yankees started wearing pin stripes to make Babe Ruth appear thinner!
