Complete and Comprehensive

Finally, a complete and comprehensive guide to planning, designing AND constructing green roofs, A to Z. Most books on the topic of green roofs only offer case studies or explain the reasons why we need green roofs, but not the nuts and bolts. This book gives you all of the tools required from understanding the planning involved up front down to the technical details of design loads for trees and selection of waterproofing systems. As a landscape architect, this is one reference I find valuable for any project over structure.

Conceptual School Book

This book is very well written etc. The subject matter, as well as its thoroughness can cause a person to think that they might know how to install a green roof. The facts of the matter, however, are quite to the contrary. The book is written with the assumption that the reader is an executive at a large firm which is willing to spew large dollars to purchase a large green roof. The book is filled with common sense like 'make sure the contractor you select is qualified for installing green roofs'. After reading this book, you will become throughly educated upon all of the proper questions to ask someone whom is willing to sell you the answers. The actual answers and NOT in this book.

If you have the intent to install a green roof, then search the web with the intent to purchase a green roof. Sellers of products required to build a green roof are much more helpful with what is actually available, what it actually required, how to actually assemble it, how much it actually weighs, what species of plats will actually work in your area etc. The person who wrote this book said something like 'make sure the species of plant you select will actually grow on a roof in your area' and many more words without providing actual species lists for various areas.

If you actually have a few million dollars in your pocket and you are going to head something way large and would like a general class on the subject, then buy this book. If you are a teacher and would like your students to think you know what you are talking about, then buy this book.

This book has a wide variety of information, however, it does seem aimed at much larger projects. It discusses much, but gives few recommendations. For instance, it discusses built up roofing and sbs roofs, who in their right mind would consider putting them under a green roof? There seems to be a fear of recommending or discounting things. I guess I did expect more specifics. There are many places where it states "X is used in many green roofs" or "green roof designers generally do this" Is this good? Is this bad? What do you think? I am reading your book, I want to know what you think! I cannot recall many places where it states 'don't'

It does have some illustrations of the green roof layers. I think I wanted more

Overall, it is a multidisciplinary look at all of the topics involved in a green roof, but after reading you will not be ready to do it, unless by building a green roof you mean hiring the people who do it.

So I still need a book on plantings.....

I still need a book by a hands on green roof builder about building in my climate.....

It does have info on weights of soils etc.

So it is a good book, but not the book I wanted it to be, so who's fault is that?

Like a book about love, without mentioning the sex-- i.e.: cost of trading, borrowing, shorting, availability, & other such...

The book is okay. But then, almost any reasonable system that you stick to, like any reasonable strategy you stick to, to keep you from doing stupid things, will work better than doing things on the fly.
I run hedge funds for more than two decades, so what I will say here is the real world:
- O'Shaughnessy much vaunted book is okay, but his results are way over-optimistic. We re-tested his strategies. His best ones are for thinly traded stock, and trading costs are not even included. When you re-run the strategies, with real trading costs, the results are much more modest.
- Also, in today's world of High Frequency Trading, any time you place an order, an HFT mafioso (tipped by the exchange for a bribe) sneaks in front of you, and before you trade, he'll buy it and re-sell it to you higher. Something like an illegal Hotel.com that takes a cut off every hotel room. The Exchanges know of this, but half their business is HFT, so tough. The SEC knows, too, but if they apply the rules, half the exchanges will go bust. So trading today has costs you don't even know.
- All the fancy ratios and bankruptcy forecasters are nice. There are plenty out there. There is also the classic "Financial Shenanigans," by Shcillit and Perler, some of whose insights can be put on a spreadsheet and connected to Capital IQ (or other databases). But so what. The chances of you making the millions of consecutive right decisions needed to make money, is very small.
Why millions of consecutive decisions?
- Here it is:If you can make a decision per minute-- and the decision is Act / Not act (let alone Buy / Sell / Short / Close short / Do nothing)-- it is like throwing a coin once a minute. What this book recommends is, DO NOTHING 99% of the times, and DO THE RIGHT THING 1% of the time.
What's the chance you come up with right sequence of ACT? You think you can do it? You heard of adrenaline? And testosterone? And serotonin? And other internal combustion bio-liquids? How long will you be able to stay inactive, if the coin says NO, NO, NO...? A year? Two? You have hobbies, maybe?
- Re shorting:
Shorting is not automatic. The cost of short is both price, and borrow fee. The best stocks to short are most in demand, and to borrow them would cost you 5-6% per year for the cheapest, and up to 20% per year (!) for the one falling fastest. I.e.: The stock lender will take his cut. And not only that, but the number of shares you can borrow (unless you want to borrow IBM or ORCL) will be bubkes, because hedge funds like me get first call.
- When the stock starts falling, the interest you pay on the borrow fee starts zooming, because other shorters want it, and so the lender starts jacking up the lending rate. If you don't want to pay it, fine: close your position. I.e.: buy it back. But in not very liquid stocks, this will artificially create a short squeeze. If it rises 25 - 30% and keeps rising, and you pay 10 - 15 - 20% on the borrow, it feels just like your nuts being squeezed. You like it? Go ahead, sell short on a mechanical signal...
- The most important parameter in running money is POSITION SIZE. The second is: fit the position size to your nuts' pain threshold. The one main thing this book does not say is how to avoid throwing in the towel, because your portfolio is down 30%, and the half of it which is short, also pays 12% interest rates per year. You will stay in the position? Yeah? Why? Because a piece of printed paper + a website says so?
- All in all, though, the book ain't bad. But learning to invest from a book that does only models and back testing, is like learning to box from a booklet of instructions. (I did that too, years ago, before I started with a real trainer). What it doesn't teach you is how to act in REAL TIME. Or, rather, how NOT to act, in real time. To get punched, and not blindly react. Just keep bobbing and weaving and not hit back because of emotion. Like boxing, knowing the difference between a hook and a haymaker and a suckerpunch is nice. But knowing and doing, well...
- Sure, read the book. But then, before you buy and sell, PAPER TRADE FOR A YEAR OR TWO. This will teach you about yourself, too. Then go ahead and invest.
I know none of what I said will stick. But what the hell. You've been forewarned. As in boxing, merely keeping your shorts on seems easy. It' ain't.

Practical, good ideas

The basic idea in this book is to be fully invested all the time, and have 50% on long positions, and 50% on short positions : in bull markets, the long positions outperform the short ones, and vice versa for bear markets.
In order to find the trading candidates, use both fundamental analysis and technical analysis.

The book offers 7 different systems, which work (approximately) like that :
On a regular basis (each week end for example), run a fundamental scan to find stocks to buy, run a fundamental scan to find stocks to short, then pass all the stocks in technical filters to only keep the best ones. Or use technical scans first, and then fundamental filters. At the end of the process, chances are you already have a position in most of the stocks. On the next trading day, liquidate your positions on the stocks that weren't in your list and open the next positions.

The author mentions the tools he uses, so that you can run the same scans (but none of them are free ...)

All in all, the ideas presented here are good. "Neutralizing" the market by being long and short at the same time is a good idea. I also like the mixing of fundamental data and technical analysis to find the stocks.
To be specific : he uses Piotroski ratings, Navellier's Porfolio Grader, Zacks Rank, CANSLIM and free cash flow yield for the fundamentals, and his own technical setups described in Trend Trading for a Living (which should be read before) + a new one, based on Bollinger bands.

A word of caution : don't expect to make money following blindly the systems ... the author explicitly states that you'll need to break the rules when you "feel" it (he calls that "discretion") ... that comes with experience or by studying with a mentor.

On the minus side :
I personally think the author tries too hard to sell his stuff (the Trend Trading Toolkit for example, that you really can avoid, or his coaching...).
Furthermore, I think there's not enough explanation about his systems (why mix this fundamental scan with this technical scan, and not another one ?).

Charles M. Jaksec III has served as a school social worker in The Hillsborough County School District for 21 years and has been a member of the district’s crisis intervention team for 18 years. He serves as the chairperson of the district’s Bullying Committee and is a member of the district’s Violence Prevention Committee. Jaksec is the author of The Difficult Parent: An Educator’s Guide to Handling Aggressive Behaviors (Corwin Press 2004) and The Confrontational Parent: A Practical Guide for School Leaders (Eye On Education, Inc. 2003). He speaks nationally and locally on the topics of school crisis intervention and parental aggression. Jaksec has a master’s degree in counseling services from Slippery Rock University, and an educational specialist degree in counselor education and a doctorate in curriculum and instruction from the University of South Florida.

Good, but would not recommend to beginners.

I was looking for a book that would relate to a lot of the stuff I am learning in my program at school (Masters Degree). The book is very detailed which is good, but if you do not have a lot of experience with some of the formulas being used you might struggle. Not that I am a pro, but I have been around long enough to understand what the book is trying to teach. The book is ok. Its not bad, but its not great either. Some of the examples it uses could use more detail or better wording. Also, at the end of each chapter there are some test problems, but I could not find the answers anywhere in the book. The questions have a "CD" Image next to the questions, but I do not know if that means a disk should have come with the book. Bottom line. If this subject is new to you, then you may want to look into other books. I would only recommend this book to people at an intermediate level.

Something to note: The book came damaged with a cracked spine and a couple of other dents. That was a little disappointing since I was expecting a book wrapped in plastic that looks new and not used. I am going to return the book because of that. Regardless of the damage, my rating is based solely on the material of the book. But the time I had with it was enough to see how much of a rating I would give it. I am waiting for my other book to come in which is an Operations Management book (ISBN-13: 978-0078024108). I am hoping for a better layout in my new OM book. Especially since it cost a lot more ;)

Good for what it does, bad for what it doesn't.

I'm not yet through with this book in the course I am taking that uses it, so bear that in mind. Also bear in mind that I come from a mathematical background, not a management or industrial or systems engineering background. That said, this book is distinctly divided into two major areas:

1) What it does well
2) What it doesn't do well

Let's talk about what it doesn't do well. New in this edition are the inclusion of many qualitative ideas including risk factors involving a range of four terms from variation to chaos (something apparently new in the field), a guidance on methodologies for aggregate planning, the entirety of Chapter 7, among other things.

And for each of these things (we're currently on chapter 4 in class, but I've read through Chapter 10), nothing is explained in any concrete terms. It comes off as a lot of double speak to throw you around so the author can say "Hey we included this new material now we're the most comprehensive book out there!" You're given a rough explanation on something, shown no example on how someone might apply this knowledge, and then asked to explain things yourself. This was quite the issue in both the Variation-Chaos range of risk analysis (where the wording of each example you're supposed to match to one of the four terms was largely ambiguous) and when dealing with aggregate planning but considering "special cases," such as stock outs, demand backordered or lost, etc.

In some cases, you're meant to justify a point (like deciding if something is a variational risk or a planned risk), but the author gives no real indication that this is okay and treats it more as a binary idea (you're right or wrong so choose correctly). This is disconcerting since apparently, there actually IS a statistical difference in the differences in terms--meaning there are concrete differences in them, so there actually can be right or wrong answers. Considering this edition was copyrighted 2015, the BASIC paper defining these terms came out in the early 2000s, and significant research has been done to better elucidate those terms since then, this author could have done just a wee bit more research into how managers/researchers actually USE these terms.

But in the case of aggregate planning, the biggest offender comes into play. Engineering is a largely jargon-heavy field, where each textbook uses its own vocabulary, experienced professionals use theirs, and while there is much overlay, good textbooks accurately explain (sometimes just one sentence is necessary) what this jargon means.

This book does not. You are assumed to not only have some knowledge of manufacturing or production and the jargon associated, you are ALSO expected to have knowledge of financial measures you might not yet have. This is because the book talks about a few ideas as if you already knew them and then tells you to deal with said problem. A rough example is the book telling you that stock outs can be a major factor in aggregate planning because of some reason, so now here's a problem telling you to modify a previous problem but include a stock out.

Don't know what a stock out is? Don't know how you modify an existing problem to accurately reflect it? That's too bad. It's not a hard thing to do, but neither is adding 2 and 3 to get 5, but you still had to learn it somehow by counting two and then three more fingers on your hand when you were younger. Imagine if your teacher taught you how to add but assumed you already knew; here we have an operations book teaching operations analysis and assuming you have some operations analysis knowledge already. Bad idea.

Which leads to the other offender that isn't TOO bad but only because of my "good points" section coming up. There are very few examples illustrating how to do anything at all. The book is largely interested in the qualitative or descriptive explanations for why things are the way they are. From a math background, this is the engineering equivalent of "handwaving" that math text authors will use to skip several steps between examples or (worse) proofs. Normally (again, for my upcoming explanation), this isn't too bad. The problem is how VARIED the problems all are, requiring some precision in tinkering with the machinery, but you're only told the basics of what an idea is.

Imagine if someone detailed to you, very clearly, the steps in assembling a basic electronic circuit involving resistance, capacitance, inductance, and voltage. And then you were suddenly given a brief explanation for what a signal antenna does, and you were now asked to build one. Good luck! But that is what is done here frequently.

So now let's talk about the good points!

The examples this book does show, they are amazingly explained with almost every step fully detailed, and the problem types are varied enough for you that, when you solve them, you will wind up with many different tools under your belt to tackle just about any problem (provided of course you can handle them). In many cases, problems are solved through Excel than by hand, and this book doesn't just throw Excel at you--it teaches you how to work with Excel. You are told, very clearly, not only what to do, but WHY you need to do it according to the formulas or problem presentation, so you can accurately (and correctly) link your machinations to your actual thinking process (indeed, many students struggle seeing their professor quickly go through an example in Excel or on the computer when equations and examples are solved in the book step-by-step, or "by hand.").

In fact, this book is an excellent text on showing you how you ought to be setting up problems in Excel so you can learn really, REALLY good organizational skills in managing your worksheets. Except for books specifically dealing with Excel (like the Excel 2013 Bible), I don't think I've seen a book that better illustrates the organization good planners use when creating tables of information to use (and it all starts early on in Chapter 3's Aggregate Planning, so you get a lot of experience throughout the rest of the book, where many other books just throw in an Appendix saying "oh by the way you can use Excel here's how").

This, then, is the perfect marriage of thinking like a planner (working by hand or thought) and planning like a worker (putting numbers in a table and manipulating them to some extent).

There is also some obvious thought as to the flow of the book. You're taken from Step 1 of the planning procedure all the way to the Final Step of the production procedure in a way that, I think, accurately reflects the production plant's "mind," if it can have one. I've seen books that throw all the basics of all the steps at the beginning and use the latter half to discuss special situations. This book prefers to handle everything in a timely way. Need to learn how to deal with inventory? Done. What about inventory with uncertain demand? That's not 12 chapters away because it's "special," that comes logically right after. Considering how irritatingly many engineering books are written, especially one so focused on descriptive ideas rather than pure number crunching math, this is a welcome breath of fresh air.

It can be compared to the massive and commonly used Operations Research text by Winston, which is a typical student's introduction to linear programming, operations research, and program planning. That book is definitely the ideal introduction to a subject with how clearly examples are done, but the flow of topics seems... Off. Integer programming is formally taught way too late considering how frequently it gets mentioned in earlier chapters (mentioned for good reasons, meaning it would have been better included earlier).

But back to this, the flow is superb.

And finally, the math. The math is written just well enough to justify itself as a typical undergraduate engineering book. This is meant for the user, not the researcher, so theory is largely discarded in favor of explanations for the basis of the equation(s), as well as derivations of useful equations based on "initial equations" that come from said explanations. Most engineering textbooks are pure derivations whose explanations are reduced to simply "We're going to turn equation 1 into equation 2. Why? Just do it." The author clearly intends this book for a student to learn FIRST, not a worker who needs a reference first.

All in all, I plan on keeping this text, and I definitely recommend it, even if I don't give it 5 stars. There are just things it can do better, but this is certainly not a bad book at all.
