About the Author

Brenda Bevan Remmes lives with her husband near Black River Swamp, South Carolina, in an old family home filled with the history of generations past. Her stories and articles have appeared in many publications and journals, including Newsweek. She spent her career conducting rural health education programs for the Schools of Medicine at both the University of North Carolina and the University of South Carolina. The Quaker Café is her first novel.

The Quaker Cafe has it all: fascinating plot, engaging characters and timely themes

The Quaker Cafe stimulates the fiction reader’s interest from numerous perspectives.

First, The Quaker Cafe develops a compelling plot that unfolds in a small town setting in North Carolina where the Quaker theme is always present. The book was educational in that I learned a lot about the Quaker faith and their style. In addition, I basked in my journey through the lives and backgrounds of different characters, the various scenes in the story, and the multiple themes reflected in the book. I also enjoyed how the author integrates humor into a book with clever mysteries and fascinating twists and turns. I found myself laughing out loud many times!

Another one of The Quaker Café’s strong points is the development of its characters. Many of the names are ingenious; their different levels of complexity, uniqueness and depth are intriguing; and their interaction and dialog are fascinating. From Grandma and Grandpa Hoole, to Judge and Maggy Kendall, to Liz and Chase, to Miss Ellie, to Frogbelly, to Luanne and Issac, etc., each character is unique and reflects a complex person for the reader to get to know and enjoy. As I read, the characters jumped off the pages!

Probably one the most interesting attributes of the book is how the author reflects life challenges and themes: racism, faith and religion, honesty and dishonesty, family, love, dying, lust, secrecy, and human frailty. I found myself evaluating these themes in some aspect of my life. Specifically, the book caused me to reflect on life as it really is, and how society's standards are applied in different situations (race relations, religion, family relationships, caring for people who are dying, etc.).

I strongly recommend the book to a variety of audiences. To the light hearted reader, to the reader seeking answers to the complexities of life, or to the reader that just wants to be entertained.

Just Finished - Glad I Read It

I'm a big fan of entering other cultures - and for this Midwestern-raised, adopted New Englander, the South is another culture. Not to mention the world of contemporary Quakerism. The Quaker Café is a joyful read with a carefully crafted story that ends from the heart. It rings true. Read and enjoy!

Absolutely Loved this Book!

This is a book where the characters will remain with you long after the last chapter - one where you curl up and so love the characters that when you must stop reading, they stay in your thoughts so that picking up the book again is such a reward just to get back into the story. I will not give away the plot, but I can say this book is well-written, keeps moving, and has some really good laughs along the way. Also, I have read many books with Amish influence and this is the first dealing with the Quaker religion. Learned a few things, also, so it’s a win-win book for me. I hope there is a sequel.

In-Extremis Medical Care

My disclaimer, I am not a doctor or medical professional. My medical training has entailed Combat Life Saver, Special Operations Tactical Combat Casualty Care, Emergency Medical Technician - Intermediate (EMT-I) and EMT-T (Tactical) (both of which I am not current) and various medical cross-training I have received from Special Forces medics. My experience has included treating combat wounded personnel (all trauma related) and provided third world medical support and assistance in South-west Asia and Africa. So my review and recommendation is from my perspective on this topic.

This book does an excellent job of providing advance skills to layman and professional. I found with my limited medical background the information presented in this book, I could accomplish in-extremis situations. I have read various books on emergency, primitive, survivalist and backcountry medical care and none have compared to this text. Some of the books in my library I am referring to are listed below;

"Ditch Medicine: Advanced Field Procedures for Emergencies" by Hugh Coffee
"Where There Is No Doctor" by David Werner
"Where There Is No Dentist" by Murray Dickson
"Wilderness Medicine" by Paul Auerbach
"Special Operations Forces Medical Handbook" By USSOCOM
"Emergency War Surgery" By NATO
"Emergency War Surgery" By Walter Reed Medical Center (diffrent from NATO version above)

All the above titles are excellent but, again I do believe they do not stand up to this title. If I was to pick one book above to use in conjunction with this book for my operational use, it would be Werner's book "Where There is No Doctor" just because this book has proved indispensable to me overseas in non-trauma related situations.

Overall I highly recommend this mammoth book on improvised, down-and-out medical care. I am sure this book will find its way to shelf of Special Forces medics, Survivalist, "bush" doctors and medical professionals as well as be required reading for all the fore mentioned.

Ridiculous and Impractical

I am a RN and my husband is a MD that does mostly vascular prodecures. We have started doing mission work in the Belizean jungle and have been loading up on reference books to take with us on our next trip as we are pretty much limited to the supplies we bring ourselves. We love "Where There Is No Doctor" and "Oxford Handbook of Tropical Medicine". I read each review for Improvised Medicine and was surprised when we read through the book when it arrived a few days ago. The content is laughable, litterally, we had uncontrollable laughter at the suggestions of "care" in this book! Under amputations it said to build a trough, fill it with 150LBS of "crushed ice" and soak the patient's limb in there to numb it, then take the patient to OR where the OR team is waiting??!!! First who has time or matierials to build a trough in the middle of "Extreme" places? Second, unless you are in Alaska, where are you going to find 150lbs of ice? Crushed ice at that! And an entire OR team is available to you, but no one has anything to medically numb the patient? In most sections of the book you would have to go to speciality store or look online to buy the items he suggests for medical care, you surely aren't going to find them just laying around. I can see where non medical people wouldn't know how ridiculous and impractical this book is, because on the surface it may sound like "okay, maybe that would work". We returned it! There are too many practical books out there. Don't buy this book unless you are giving it as a gag gift to someone in the medical field!

This rollicking ballad springs from an actual incident: captured in 1720 aboard the sloop Vanity when their dilatory mates "below, did drink and sport," the "pirate queens" Anne Bonney and Mary Reade escaped hanging because they were pregnant. Author and artist imagine them later, roughhousing with their grandchildren, while their fellow pirates are fated to sail a ghost ship ("And silver the coins and silver the moon,/ Silver the waves on the top of the sea,/ When the ghostly ship comes sailing in,/ That gallant Vanity"). Yolen and Shannon sail a different course than the one they plotted for the darker and more tragic Encounter (1992). Yolen approaches this almost farcical incident in simple, occasionally rough verse. Ironic in their stateliness, Shannon's paintings-framed, captioned in a scrawled script and otherwise composed to evoke the 18th century-display a sly humor; Mary and Anne in profile "pleading their bellies" before a judge will elicit chuckles. Not for everyone, but offbeat and grimly amusing. Ages 4-12. Children's BOMC featured selection.

Yolen writes a most unusual ballad of pirate adventure that sings the history of Anne Bonney and Mary Reade, the only 2 women of the 12 pirates aboard the Vanity. They defend the ship from the men of the governor's man-o'-war, Albion, while their captain and the rest of the crew are below drinking rum and playing cards. The females are absolutely the best and bravest of this bad lot. The Vanity is taken; all are brought to trial, but Anne and Mary escape hanging by "pleading their bellies" (claiming they are pregnant), a page taken from history for which Yolen provides notes. Shannon's acrylics are rich, dark, and realistic, and expand upon the story. Faces glow as they did in his work for Rafe Martin's Rough-Face Girl (Putnam, 1992). The depth of the art is reminiscent of great classic illustrators working in oil, especially N.C. Wyeth. This is not for the faint of heart?no good pirate story is?as pirates are not a God-fearing lot. In this picture book for older readers, Yolen's ballad recounts the last stand of Anne Bonney and Mary Reade, real-life women pirates of the early 1700s. When a government vessel attacked their ship, Anne and Mary fought back fiercely. Although they called to their fellow pirates for help, their male comrades (including the women's "husbands" ) lolled below deck, drinking rum and playing cards. The men were hanged, but the women "pled their bellies," and the judge freed the pregnant pirates. Yolen's jingly rhymes are a little forced in places but lend themselves well to theatrical reading aloud. Shannon's very handsome acrylic paintings convey the tale's excitement with dramatic compositions in bold reds against smoky backgrounds. The eighteenth-century feeling is enhanced by pen-and-ink borders and the use of a parchment-colored background for the text. Pirate fans will enjoy Yolen's informative author's note--and the alluring skull and crossed swords on the back cover. Leone McDermott

The Ballad of the Pirate Queens

The book that I chose to read for my third critical reflection was called The Pirate Queens. The book was based on the true story of the final voyage of female pirates Anne Bonney and Mary Reade. It portrays the scenario of how Bonney and Reade's ship The Vanity was overtaken by a government sent ship headed by Captain Albion. The story was one of war, pride, and deceit. The crew of The Vanity, consisting of all men, turne their back on the female pirates and chose not to assist in defending the ship. As a result, the ship is seized and burned and the entire crew was put to death. Bonney and Reade, however, were spared due to the fact that they were expecting children. At this particular time in history it was unthinkable to murder an unborn child regardless of the crimes of the mother. This book is a good read for young children for many reasons. For one, it is easy to read and understand. The author, Jane Yolen, does a great job of describing the scene in an easy to understand, entertaining way. There were several parts of the book that are written in rhyme which is something that I always enjoyed as a child because it made the text easier to follow. Also, ever couple of pages the book returns to a recurring phrase which emphasizes The Vanity's beauty, power, and presence as one of the great ships of the time. The literature is presented in a scroll fashion on the left page. This gives the book a feeling of the time it is describing. The background in which the words are written are a dull yellow which is consistent with how an old manuscript would look presently. Another fabulous aspect of the book is the illustrations. I am not in any way exaggerating when I say that the illustrations within this book are among the best I have ever seen. Each picture takes up the entire left side of the page. These pictures are extremely detailed in every aspect. David Shannon, who illustrated the book, did so with an acrylic paint on an illustration board. As a result is has a very rustic and real look to it which adds greatly to the overall appeal of the book. Each picture is very dark. This also gives the reader a feel for the time since lighting was at a minimal almost anywhere in the world, especially on sea. All of the pictures also have a phrase which describes who or what the picture is illustrating. For example there is a picture in the middle of the book which shows an enemy ship, called The Albion, approaching The Vanity. The caption reads, "The Albion engages the Vanity in battle." The idea that this book is good based solely on the fact that children would like it cut the potential of this book short. Often the idea of whether or not the book will appeal to children is what I focus on. Here, I think it is important to point out that this book is interesting enough to stand alone regardless of its intended audience. Overall, based on the illustrations alone, I think that this book is the best I have reflected upon to this point. Their is a lot of aesthetic appeal that really catches the eye and allows for a great deal of fantasy. This along with the interesting story that accompanies it are both reasons to share this adventure young children of both genders. The idea of pirate life will fascinate young boys while the fact that the two main characters were women will keep young girls interested.

I am a middle school principal and I have this book framed in my office - I love, love, love it! This is the first time I have felt compelled to write a review and am delighted it is for this book! Kids love it and it's a reading choice when they're waiting for any reason in the office. My copies have been stolen and replaced so many times in the last eight years that I lost count. That's quite a great recommendation from a kid!

¡Un verdadero "Page-Turner"!

Cuando adquirí este libro, jamás pensé que sería tan bueno. Todo, absolutamente todo, está integrado de forma impecable. Los personajes, la trama, los giros, el clímax, las escenas, el estilo... Fue una tremenda experiencia leerlo. Para ser sincero, al principio me chocó un poco el título. Pero cuando por fin comprendí qué significa, considero que fue perfecto llamarlo así: Matando Elefantes.

No he parado de recomendar esta novela, que fue lo que me hizo escribir esta reseña.

Y para el que pidió la lista de mnemotécnica, aquí ponga una, utilizando la misma tabla que Harvey nombra en la

Lo mejor de este libro es lo real que queda mostrado todo aquello que nos estanca en la vida. Es la imagen típica: la familia que quiere un buen futuro para su hijo, el hijo que entra a la universidad a estudiar algo que no le gusta, la frustración que se experimenta durante el proceso. El estancamiento que esto nos provoca... Hasta que entra el personaje de Harvey en la historia.
Este Harvey es otra cosa. Tienes unas ideas y unos métodos extraños, es un creído, pero sabe lo que hace. Y ese es el tipo el que pone a pensar al protagonista (y a nosotros). El resto de la novela es todo el proceso y las cosas que terminan haciendo para dejar de ser dos tipos comunes y convertirse en gente de poder y dinero.
Vale la pena leerla. Te pone a pensar mucho.

Me he reído y llorado con este libro. Al principio tiene un tono un tanto jocoso, pero más adelante va tornándose mucho más serio y complejo. — La verdad es que he leído muy pocos libros en español que sean como este. Y hasta me he pasado largas en internet buscando varios de los términos y métodos que se mencionan en la novela, como los trucos de nemotécnica, estrategias de seducción, consejos para escritores y sobre el concepto de quemar las naves. — Es una historia adictiva. Los capítulos son cortos y siempre terminan con un gancho que te obligan a comenzar el próximo. Es un libro poco largo, por lo que no se puede leer de una tirada, pero tiene la ventaja de que dura. Está muy interesante, en especial el personaje de Harvey.

About The Silmarillion

I have chosen to use this review to tell a little about the Silmarillion because I would venture to think that most persons interested in this work have a fair idea of Tolkien's writing already and need few opinions from me. I will add, however, that reading this book does give a sense that Tolkien put extreme passion into this particular collection as there are many places that lesser authors may have chosen to "phone it in." This collection differs from other works of this series mostly in the regard that fewer pages are needed to cover events. In that sense, persons who may have previously experienced difficulty with the pace of Tolkien's writing may find this work more pleasing.

The Silmarillion, a posthumous publication from Christopher Tolkien in 1977, combines several myths, or five separate parts, written by J. R. R. Tolkien which remained unfinished upon his death. The stories take place in a time preceding The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings of Middle-earth. Though Tolkien began his work on The Silmarillion prior to writing The Lord of the Rings; each of the five sections had been intended as separate stories, but J. R. R. Tolkien wished them to be published as a single unit when it became clear they would not reach finished stories on their own. Because Tolkien had been so passionate about the works comprising The Silmarillion, he had numerous sources of notes and other material from which Christopher pulled (along with a few of his own necessary “gap-fillers”) to complete the book.

Ainulindale: The first story concerns the creation of Ea, the “world that is”, or the universe encompassing Valinor, Beleriand, Numenor, as well as Middle-earth. Eru (The One) creates the Ainur and commanded them to devise great music from a central theme. Among the Ainur is Melkor, the strongest of the demiurges, who rebelled by creating a song of his own and breaking the Ainurs’ harmony on three occasions. Eru granted the Ainur a vision of Arda and later offered that they may descend to Arda and rule.

The Ainur who ventured to Arda were bound to this world in physical form. The Valar were born of the greatest of the Ainur while the Maiar were of the weakest. The Valar did great work in preparation for the arrival of Elves and Men to Arda, but Melkor ravaged their work in order to keep Arda for himself. The fight between the Valar and Melkor consumes the majority of the Ainuliundale, but ends in the creation of the world.

Valaquenta: Part two tells the story of the mystical powers present in Ea, the Valar and Maiar. Detail is most focused to the Valar and Melkor as well as the story of Melkor’s rise to power over the Maiar who go on to identify as the Balrogs and Sauron.

Quenta Silmarillion: This is the longest tale of the book and describes Silmaril wars, the events leading to the First Age. In Melkor’s continuing destruction of the Valars’ work, the lamps tasked to light the world were obliterated. Leaving Middle-earth and Melkor in darkness, the Valar migrated west to Aman which would become their new home, Valinor.

As the Elves began to awaken, it was the Valor who defended them from Melkor. Many Elves then traveled to Aman as others stayed behind, namely the Sindar under the rule of Thingol and Melian.

Akallabeth: The fourth story occurs in the Second Age and tells of the Downfall of Numenor. The island kingdom of Numenor is granted to three loyal houses of Men.

Of the Rings of Power and the Third Age: The final section is familiar as it leads to the matters that become the subject of The Lord of the Rings.

The definition of "masterpiece" itself!

Let's begin...

First, I'm not what people call a "Tolkien purist" or a "Tolkien fanatic" or whatever. I read "Lord Of The Rings" only once (liked it a lot), "The Hobbit" only once (liked it, but less than "Lord Of The Rings"), watched the movies, and, only now, I stared "The Silmarillion" in the eye!

And I loved it. With all my heart. The book is majestic, breathtaking, excting. Let me get to some points:

a. I completely understand those who not enjoy the writing style or the book itself, even thoso who KNOW that this is not a novel, but almost a history book of a fictional mythology.

b. There is violence. A lot. A lot of violence. It's tragedy after tragedy after tragedy, after betrayal, etc. But there is no gore. There are no cheap George R.R. Martin moments here.

c. The Glossary is amazing. All one needs to do, in order to rembember all the names that appear in the book, is to consult the glossary at the end of the book.

d. I think one should understand the following, about the writer's writing style: for Tolkien, EVERY WORD COUNTS. There's no verborragia, no filler. He is set on a mission to tell a fable, and he does so with economy of word, but with deep impact.

The negative aspect of reading this book is that, day after day, I enjoy LESS the movies!

A challenging but highly rewarding read, to say the least. This is the moslty complete history of Middle Earth, from its Genesis through ancient wars and forgotten epochs to the end of the dominion of the Elves. The scope of these tales are epic, and the consequences of heroic deeds and tragic follies can be felt across long ages as Elves, Men, Dwarves, and the gods themselves wage eternal war against the demonic forces of the twisted god whom Sauron served before he himself became the Dark Lord, and all the land is rended and reshaped. And this is only the beginning. After the tale of the War of the Silmarils comes the Akallabeth, the stories of the lost land of Numenor and Man's fall from grace. The legends end with a short retelling of the Lord of the Rings with some interesting tangents and perspectives on the events and major players in the War of the Ring. These legends are to what Tolkien devoted his imagination, and it is a tragedy that he could not finish them before his passing, yet if one could be convinced, this book could almost suffice as a holy text. This work carries weight comparable to the Illiad and the Odyssey, and is probably not for the casual reader, but its fulfilment is one of the most rewarding since reading Homer's epics. Since many tales in this book could not be completed in the time Tolkien had on this mortal plane, I would recommend also reading "The Unfinished Tales of Numenor and Middle Earth" for even more depth, though, as the title suggests, those stories, too, remain incomplete with Tolkien's passing. May the Valar guide and protect his spirit wherever it may be.
