About the Author
As someone who has plunged both hands wrist-deep into the soup bowl at a work dinner (believing it to be a finger bowl), and asked a surprisingly accommodating elderly lady on the bus if he could sit on her rather than next to her, thanks to a bumbling phrasebook, Rory Boland can honestly say that he’s been on the frontlines of living abroad.

After stints in Wales, the United States, and Poland, Rory and his partner Martyna moved to Hong Kong in 2006, where he found work as an editor for a city tourist magazine and a flat the size of a refrigerator in Wan Chai. During his time in Hong Kong, Rory learned how to successfully ride the red minibuses, never to say “no” to the boss, and not to let the bar owners in Lan Kwai Fong see you buying beers at a 7-Eleven. He also co-authored the third edition of National Geographic Traveler: Hong Kong and edited for Zagat’s inaugural guidebook to Hong Kong.

Rory has contributed to newspapers and magazines such as The Boston Globe, The Irish Times, and Time Out. He splits his time between the sweaty streets of Hong Kong and the windswept tundras of Warsaw—reading, writing, and using sinks rather than soup to wash his hands.

A worthwhile addition to any library

The Ultimate Encyclopedia of Mythology is not really complete in that it doesn't cover the African, Australian, and North and South American mythology, but other than that it does a good job of covering the rest of the world's mythology. The myths covered include Greece & Rome, the Celtic world, the Nordic lands, Egypt and West Asia, South and Central Asia, and East Asia. Each section or geographical area is lavishly illustrated and well-researched.It makes for an interesting read for those who are fascinated by world mythology, and also serves as a valuable research tool into the myths of ancient cultures.

Annwn, Visnu, and Hades - Oh My!

This is a delightful book. I can honestly say that this is one of the best whim purchases that I've made. Do you want to know about Annwn, Visnu, Ebisu or even Hades? This is a great book for north eastern hemisphere mythology. It has your standard myths of Greece and Rome and Egypt. It also has Celtic, Norse, South / Central and Eastern Asia. Norse mythology covers the Slavic and Germanic mythology. Celtic covers the British Isles mythology. South and Central Asia cover Buddhism, Hinduism and other mythology from the area in and around India. Eastern Asia cover Japan, China and the various mythologies from the Orient. Egyptian mythology is covered under Eypt and West Asia, which includes Sumeria, Arabia, Mesopotamia and more. This is a well rounded book of mythology.
Originally this was published in two volumes (The Encyclopedia of Mythology and The Encyclopedia of Eastern Mythology), the editors have complied on fabulous book. The preface give you a brief overall introduction and the author's view on why we have myths. Each section starts with an introduction to that particular area. Each myth (the Greek and Roman section starts with Achilles) is listed alphabetically in it section with cross reference (in italics) to other myths in that section. The only thing that is missing is a pronunciation of the myth. The book is rich with pictures showing each myth. The entries are brief, but they are still detailed enough. Each entry has a picture. There are also pictorial features that highlight certain things that the authors thought were important to each of the mythologies. Greek and Rome have Lovers of Zeus, Heroes and more. The Myths of East Asia have Yin & Yang, Chinese Dragons and more. This book is a treasure.

Nearly Ultimate

This beautifully illustrated tome on world mythologies now possesses pride of place upon our coffee table. I would call it the "Nearly Ultimate Encyclopedia of Mythology" because it does not include Australian, African, South American, or North American mythology. Most of the rest of the world is covered, however, and covered rather well. The book is divided into large sections, one on each of the major world traditions (e.g. "The Myths of East Asia"). Within each section you will find encyclopedic coverage of that tradition, including very fine artwork. I give the book the highest rating, despite the omissions, because it is truly an excellent mythology resource (and treats the "major" world traditions in mythology).
If you like Bullfinch's, but would like something more pleasing to look at, this book is for you. It's captivating, and fun to peruse.

I’d like to share a few of my own thoughts

Contemporary British philosopher Nigel Warburton, host of the podcast series “Philosophy Bites” asks us to consider if the live peacock Belgian artist Francis Alÿs recently sent to the Venice Biennale to be entered as a work of art is, in fact, a true work of art. Curiously, this is the same question my philosophy instructor asked our class nearly fifty years ago when he showed us a slide of Alpha-Pi by Morris Lewis, a white canvas with wavy lines of color painted on the bottom left and bottom right. In other words, different work, same question.

In an attempt to address this question, “What is art?” Warburton has written his engaging little book, approaching this philosophic conundrum from four specific theoretical angles: 1) Clive Bell’s significant form, that is, the work’s line, shape and color possessing the power to produce an aesthetic emotion in the viewer, 2) R.G.Collingwood’s theory of emotional expression and clarity of feeling needed in the process of artistic creation, 3) Ludwig Wittgenstein’s focus on the concept of ‘family resemblance’ along with an overview of the nature of language, 4) the ‘Institutional Theory’ developed by George Dickie, shifting attention from the work itself to the context of how the work is exhibited by museums and galleries and how it is appreciated by an audience. As by way of a wrap-up, in the fifth and final section of his little book, Nigel himself steps forward to share his views on the art question. I wouldn’t want to restate the various facets of his position but let me mention one thing he does say: we should move away from general rules and hone our attention back to the individual works themselves.

After reading Nigel’s book and giving the art question some reflection, I’d like to share a few of my own thoughts. This art question revolves around the visual arts, particularly painting and sculpture. The other arts, such as theater, dance and music do not face this question in quite the same way. Why is that? I suspect it has to do with recognized quality of performers and performances, for example, when we see or listen the best of the best – Royal Shakespeare Company, Imperial Russian Ballet, Philadelphia Orchestra, Cirque de Soleil, Pilobolus Dance -- we know we are in the presence of great art.

So, my modest view, this is what the visual arts needs in our brave new 21st century world: a breakthrough, that is, an artist or artists creating great art, so great, similar to the above examples of theater and dance, there would be no question as to its greatness. Of course, I don’t have a clue respecting the form such breakthrough art would take, nor do I think such art would sufficiently answer the question ‘What is art’ but by such a breakthrough I strongly suspect the public perception of the visual arts would be enormously enhanced.

Anyway, back on the book. Here is a passage I find especially probing, “What you know and believe affects what you see. Your expectations and knowledge don’t just help you to understand and interpret what you see, they in part help you to construct and categorize what you see.” The example offered is Van Gogh’s painting of crows flying over a cornfield. We look at the painting a first time. Then, we are told this is the last painting Van Gogh painted before killing himself. We take a second look. All of a sudden the crows appear ominous and threatening. I think this examples underscores how art can be a transforming – the more we open ourselves to multiple viewings, open ourselves to exploring the cultural and historical context of a work along with the artist’s development, the more we can grow in our understanding of that specific art form and also grow in our overall artistic sensitivity and aesthetic delicacy of taste. Am I overdoing it with all the sensitivity and delicacy? Reading Nigel Warburton’s little book will undoubtedly help you formulate an opinion. Highly recommended.

When M hatches a scheme to break out her mother, imprisoned on an upper floor, readers are vaulted on an urgent trip to a Soviet-era stadium outside Prague, the British Museum in London, and a secret apartment in Manhattan. Stolen art, moon rocks, medieval alchemy, and a lesser-known text by Geoffrey Chaucer all tie into a snowballing plot by the Fulbright leader to engineer a perfect human. Speculative technology elements are often thought-provoking. Though the narrative sometimes veers into the absurd, plot twists and vivid suspense effectively keep readers on edge. The cast here is large, and loyalties are often in question, so this volume is better understood after reading Lawless. A sudden dark turn and a cliff-hanger ending suggest another book is on the way. AWESOME!

What I Thought- This was an amazing sequel. It was extremely well-crafted. You really feel sorry for M when she realizes that she can’t trust anyone, maybe not even her own friends! This one was kind of on the depressing side, but I’m assuming it is like the bridge between the ultimate final “battle” in the series. This is the book where all hope seems gone. The characters that you meet are intriguing and keep you guessing at their motives. Justice brings up more thought-provoking questions such as in Lawless. Mr. Salane has a great writing style. It really draws you in and holds you there. Like Lawless, I couldn’t put this book down! I can’t wait to read more from Mr. Salane!

Needs a Facelift

While Justice's predecessor Lawless stumbled in many ways, it ultimately managed to be a pretty good story, minus a ridiculous ending. Unfortunately, Justice doesn't do the same. This book sees M working for the Fulbrights-which would be interesting, except for the fact that they actually accept her so easily. Also, while Lawless struggled with some of the flow of the story, Justice flops. It just isn't that interesting, and there are far too many abstract concepts. Sure, there was the Box in Lawless. But it was just a really cool high-tech simulator. Now, it's this geeky "programmable matter", that's just a big headache. If they can build suits with programmable matter, than can't everything else be programmable matter too? And what's so terrifying about a demerit? It just all feels contrived. And don't get me starting on the ending. The fact that the Fulbrights' leader is a zombie doesn't make any sense. And it's not explained either really. While parts of this book are decent, it struggles to fit together as a cohesive whole. Hopefully. Mayhem will be better.

K-Gr 3—Aurelio is a young artist with big eyes, a fedora, and, most importantly, a vivid imagination. In ink renderings on pages that maintain interest by alternating between black on white and the perception of the reverse, the boy contrasts the sense of being small—evoked when he sees rich and famous people—with the power he wields with his pen. The "Dali" headline on the book jacket's folded newspaper boat foreshadows playful bits of surrealism, e.g., an elephant in a teacup, a man who looms large on the left page in the hand of a small girl on the right. This tender composition has a familial, personal feeling. The versatile drawing instrument worries about war, expresses love, and "wears satellite sneakers with computer laces." Myers intersperses literal depictions of the pen at work (creating the child's face) with images that are described in more fanciful terms. Where the artist is walking upside down (no pen in sight), the text reads: "My pen tap-dances on the sky and draws clouds with its feet." The first-person possessive voice wears a little thin, and the connection among the pages is loose. Nevertheless, Myers has assembled a visually arresting array of sketches that will likely attract the interest of children who enjoy drawing themselves. Christopher Myers has exhibited his work at MoMA PS1, the Studio Museum in Harlem, and the Goethe Institute in Ghana. An invitation to creativity

Summary: “All you need is your imagination,” declares the cover of the book. Christopher Myers then goes on to explain all that his pen can do. It can ride dinosaurs, put an elephant in a teacup, and tell stories in the margins of the pages. Sometimes it makes mistakes, but it can draw a new face every morning. “There are a million pens in the world and each one has a million worlds inside it,” concludes Myers. “Let those worlds inside your pen out!”

Pros: A fabulous celebration of creativity and imagination. The illustrations may be Caldecott-worthy. Kids will be inspired to get out their pens and see what they can do.

Cons: If you’re expecting a story with this book, you’ll be disappointed. It’s more of a creative jumpstart.

Enjoyable reading!!!

I think you will enjoy this book very much. Robert Haag gives it three thumbs way up. O. Richard Norton says "Kevin Kichinka has written an engaging book that needed writing. This book is a compendium of human activity touching upon scientific, artistic and commercial values in which meteorites are the vehicle through time."
I got it off ebay and read it pretty fast...couldn't put it down...interesting reading and very nice pictures too. It's a great intro...not overly technical. Very practical for the beginner collector, but I have several other books on the subject and still enjoyed this a lot!!! You'll love it. It is available new online at [...] for $[...]. Amazon deleted this info I had supplied. Google it to get the book brand new very reasonably priced since Amazon does not carry it new currently.

Thanks to this book, even if I never become a meteorite FINDER I should be able to amass a good collection for a lower price than I was expecting. At least now when I buy meteorites (I'm thinking about joining the IMC Society) I will be making more informed decisions (though I will probably throw caution to the wind and buy a few Niningers and maybe a Henbury when I can afford them) especially regarding price (at least I came out ahead on a Stoney Iron found semi-locally and purchased at Chondrite prices). I am currently deciding what format of collection I want overall.
