Leveraging Digital Technologies for Marketing Managers

When I was in b-school I really learned to like well-written cases. Of course they aren't real life, but they do serve to illustrate certain points in a way that requires creative interpretation and solution rather than simple problem solving. Prof. Glen Urban does a fine job of pairing up really interesting chapters on the issues of marketing in the digital age with cases that focus in on the points he is trying to make.
This is NOT a book on building a web business or developing a web strategy for your business. Rather, it is a book for Marketing Managers to help them think through the implications for their efforts in the age of the Internet. Prof. Urban focuses on something he calls a Trust relationship, which involves giving the customer loads of information, innovation, and choice. He compares that to the standard low-price relationship he calls Push marketing. All of this culminates in the chapter and case on Citibank's online efforts.
It isn't required that you agree with every point the author makes to derive a lot of benefit from the book. I think it would make a very nice text for a marketing course that focuses on the implications of the web, Internet, and computers for segmenting the market, product positioning, product introduction, communicating with customers, pricing and distribution channel, and the idea of a Trust Relationship with customers. All good stuff that needs to be thought about.

Major disapointment

This book was required for the course that I took, and a major disapointment. Number one is content - far too theoretical and academic to be useful for a small business owner. If you go to school to get a degree and you do not require much usefulness from what you learn, then you may like this book. If you look for relevance and applicability, look elsewhere. Number two is price - on the day publishers of college textbooks acquire some ethical principles and stop charging $85 for a book that has two hundred pages and costs $3 to print, and the student has no other choice than buy it, we will live in a better world. Until then, I urge instructors to select books from publishers who do not try to goldmine students.

This work, one of the most lucidly written art history books in recent memory, addresses a topic of inherent complexity and great recent interest. Kemp (Univ. of St. Andrews), who has written on Leonardo, discusses perspective and optic theories as they related to the central problem of European painting for half a millennium, the verisimilar depiction of nature. The first part of the book discusses perspective theory and practice and the use of devices that led toward photography. In the second part, Kemp explores optic theories derived from Aristotle and from Newton and their theoretical and practical impacts on painting. The only minor cavil is the unclear order of the select bibliography; otherwise, this is a superb and thoughtful book, with a level of writing to which few can aspire. Highly recommended for general as well as special collections.

an eye opening book

i had the experience of being flooded with light and clarity when i first opened and browsed this book. my enthusiasm is in part because of kemp's extraordinary scholarship and detailed command of paintings and art publications across the entire span of western art. but it's also because the story of artistic imaging over the past six centuries is woven around the european romance with linear perspective, which has become so discredited and disliked by artists that it qualifies as a repressed memory. (like any buried memory, perspective surfaces in the dreamlike digital animations of intergalactic science fiction and first person computer games, which take perspective effects to the ultimate level of technical accuracy and artistic triviality.) kemp unearths those repressed perspective memories and shows how vital they were to the development of art and the connections between art and the wider culture of the times.

it is jaw droppingly fun to see how intensive, sophisticated and singleminded was the artistic interest in optical and perceptual issues of seeing. everyone will find special surprises here, but mine include kemp's spatial analysis of velazquez's "las meninas," and the extraordinary drawings and engravings produced c.1800, which force us to realize that we are already looking at "photo graphs," light drawings created by hand, at a time when film photography was not yet practical. there is a large section on various optical devices utilized in visual arts, including the camera obscura and camera lucida, and an excellent section on the evolving understanding and use of color, from the renaissance to seurat.

poignant for me was the victorian fascination with light as a spiritual quality, which comes through in turner's paintings and ruskin's amazing perspectival studies of "clouds" -- images that verge on op art. the intelligence and strength of these images reveal a road left untraveled in art, which turned toward the perceptually driven styles of impressionism and fauvism instead. as a bonus to the many interesting visual exhibits, the writing is lucid, sensible and alert. an invaluable publication.

The Marriage of Science and Art

In "The Science of Art", Martin Kemp (an emeritus professor of history of art at University of Oxford who is considered one of the world's leading experts on the art of Leonardo da Vinci and visualization in art and science) details the use of geometrical science of perspective and physical science of color in painting within the time period 1400-1800. In this time, the central goal of artists and theorists was the imitation of nature based on scientific principles. This book is academic and dry as well as beautiful and complex.

I was already quite familiar with perspective, as I finished The Painter's Secret Geometry recently, so I skimmed until section two on mechanical devises. Christopher Wren's perspective machine, the Claude glass, and Pierre Edouard Frer's Zograscope fascinated me. Although it felt a bit out of place, section three is interesting for its examination of color before and after Newton.

This is an important book that will endure because its makes us aware in a new way of the continuity, complexity, and ultimately the beauty of the European ideals that have linked art and science since the Renaissance and given Western culture its unique place in history. Next up for me is: The Painter's Secret Geometry: A Study of Composition in Art - two people in my art class recommended it!

For Professional Reference

Martin Kemp's book is actually two unrelated volumes in one. The first 2/3 of the book is a history of perspective technique, and the last 1/3 is a history of color technique, from the Renaissance to the Early Modern period of Western painting. The book is very technical (in the art-historical, not in the scientific, sense) and dry. This is a narrative history, and does not approach color theory or geometric perspective from any scientific reference point. My neutral rating of it (three stars) is a compromise between a two-star rating for the general reader and a possible four stars for the specialist reader.

General readers/practicing artists: "The Science of Art," as mentioned above, develops these specialized areas of art history in a narrowly technical way. This book will not help you to use or analyse perspective and color effects, whether in your own work or in other works that you might see in museums.

Art-history professionals: Kemp's book does provide a lot of information for those who are engaged with these subdivisions of art history on a professional basis. The author's approach is narrative/historical throughout, with very little theory or analysis. These factors make it most suitable for larger reference libraries.

Excellent Book On Pre and Post Contact Mesoamerican Trade

Like the other book I reviewed today, this book is the only book I could find on this subject, which I articulated as, "What was trade like before the Spanish arrived in the New World?" Specifically, I was interested in seeing the extent of trade between the Valley of Mexico and the Mayan speaking areas to the South. This book doesn't really explore that topic, but it's quite definitive on the question of trade before, during and after the Spanish conquered the Aztecs and surrounding areas.

Along the way Hassig corrects what are some still common misconceptions about the relationship between the Spanish and Mesoamerica. The most interesting misconception that Hassig tackles is the idea that the Aztec Empire was somehow weak or defective, and that the weakness was intimately related to the conquest.

Hassig examines the pre-Columbian history of the Aztecs and argue, persuasively, that the Aztecs were a hegemonic, rather then territorial empire. Roughly put, it's the difference between the Roman Empire and the British Monarchy- with the Aztecs being Roman. The Aztec Empire was what you call a low energy/low extraction Empire- the Aztecs required less from it's subjects and in turn expended fewer resources in maintaining their Empire.

This "choice" was grounded in pre existing conditions in Mesoamerica: the geography, the lack of pack animals and reliance on human transportation and the need for the Aztecs to secure their food supply in an area where any growth in a city was cause for concern. The Aztecs were aided in their ascent by their prime position inside a cluster of lakes. The only transportation alternative for the Aztecs besides people were canoes, and the canoes could carry 50 times a human. Because the Aztecs were inside a lake, they were able to extend their economic "hinterland" from any point in the water surface. This allowed them to grow larger then competitors effectively by their combined military/location advantage.

As they expanded they used merchants as advance scouts and spies. After the Conquest, the combined impact of disease and new transportation alternatives (Donkeys and wagons) the use of human carriers declined but did not stop entirely for more then a century. Hassig notes that the impact of disease preceded the Spanish conquest, so that their conquest was timed at a point when there were relatively few children (already dead from disease) and more adults (more productive, fewer family members to support) so that in the years immediately after the conquest there was relative abundance.

However, as that first disease stuck generation aged, there were fewer workers and thus it was harder for the Spanish to "live off the land" per their desire.

There's more to learn in the phys ed division than you might think

When people think about physical education, they immediately think about gym class. For many, gym class is fun. It means dodge ball and four square and running laps and other fun games. But when you actually study physical education, while it might involve some fun, there's a lot more to it. Students of this particular field have to learn about things like technology, frontal movements, aerobic dance, student growth and development and a host of other things. When it comes down to it, it's a lot of information. And when you're going to be tested on it, it's kind of intimidating. It's hard to know what to study and what to leave alone. These flash cards were a great help because they have all of the content on them that you need to know for this particular test. They broke things down into reasonable sections and grouped things together so they were easily understandable. When people saw the types of things that a phys ed student had to learn, they understood there was a lot more to the field than just fun...though I still think it's an enjoyable field for sure.

The Bhagavad Gita is often regarded as the Bible of India. With a gripping story and deeply compelling message, it is unquestionably one of the most popular sacred texts of Asia and, along with the Bible and the Qur'an, one of the most important holy scriptures in the world.

Part of an ancient Hindu epic poem, the dialogue of the Bhagavad Gita takes place on a battlefield, where a war for the possession of a North Indian kingdom is about to ensue between two noble families related by blood. The epic's hero, young Prince Arjuna, is torn between his duty as a warrior and his revulsion at the thought of his brothers and cousins killing each other over control of the realm. Frozen by this ethical dilemma, he debates the big questions of life and death with the supreme Hindu deity Krishna, cleverly disguised as his charioteer. By the end of the story, Eastern beliefs about mortality and reincarnation, the vision and practice of yoga, the Indian social order and its responsibilities, family loyalty, spiritual knowledge, and the loftiest pursuits of the human heart are explored in depth. Explaining the very purpose of life and existence, this classic has stood the test of twenty-three centuries. About the Author

Graham M. Schweig is the author and translator of Dance of Divine Love: The Råsa Lîlå of Krishna. After completing graduate work at the University of Chicago and Harvard University, he became associate professor of religious studies at Christopher Newport University and visiting associate professor of Sanskrit at the University of Virginia. Schweig was recently a Visiting Fellow of Hindu studies at Oxford University, and has been accepted as a Visiting Fellow at Cambridge University. He has traveled to India several times where for one year, under a Smithsonian Institution-funded grant, he researched ancient handwritten manuscripts. Since an early age, Schweig has practiced various forms of meditational and devotional yoga.

The Way of Devotion Helpfully Illuminated

Of the many translations of The Bhagavad Gita I have read this is certainly one of the best. Schweig's work with the text and in the commentaries (very inviting format and pleasant meter) is helping me to understand, for the first time, I think, the appeal of devotional (bhakti) yoga. In particular, Krishna's encouragement to be "absorbed in yoga" is continuing to intrigue me as I re-read this elegant translation.

While completing a degree in psychology at Harvard from 2004 to 2006, I squeezed in religion courses whenever I could, running into the Bhagavad Gita from various angles: In one course as a counterpart to the Koran, Torah, and Bible; in another as a treatise on yoga centered around the Universal Form in chapter eleven.

Great overview!

I consider myself a beginner and this book really helped me get me up and running on designing web sites. Each section is to the point and doesn't assume too much, which is perfect for me. The chapters about HTML and CSS were invaluable. It could have used a chapter on designing web graphics, so I just use GRSites for that which a lot a people seem to swear by. I found going thru the book for hours, and learning new things in an enjoyable and organized way, the author definitely writes well. Great stuff!

Effective skills builder for web authors

Karl Stolley's "How To Design and Write Web Pages Today" is a good, solid introduction to fundamentals of web page authoring. It's a collection of tools and a downloadable template which, when worked through by anyone with the must fundamental personal computer experience, a good foundation of page authoring skills and items of interest.

There just aren't enough of this kind of book these days - a simple, focused guide teaching one practical computer skill. If you know someone who continually talks about wanting to get into web development someday, this is a basic skills book they should have and work through with the downloadable Rapid Prototyping Kit (a shell of pages and sheets and javascript files) which the author maintains at his website.

HTML 5 may replace some XHTML coding, but the basic principles which a reader of this book will work through will help them engage with HTML 5 or older languages.

For experienced developers: I found it useful for reviewing and updating my site template toolbox. Might work for you too.
