Clear definitions and explanations of problems and solutions for infrastructure investment. This is the first time I have fully understood the variety of ways to consider investment in this space. It is a primer and an advanced, sophisticated and comprehensive treatment of this fast rising category of assets. Higly recommended!

An excellent overview of the topic and a few good new insights as the authors have no particular axe to grind and provide a more balanced approach than many of the other more Project Finance or PPP biased books. It covers all of the ground for each infrastructure class equally, including the less glamorous, in a very through manner. My only fault is that it is a bit out of date, as most od the reference projects are pre-Global Financial Crisis, but the basic asset class parameters described are still true today.

Not bad

I'm not truly a fan of stories where the H loses his first wife and struggles to come to terms with her death.

+++Spoilers+++
This book was really difficult because he loses her after they are expecting a baby together using a surrogate mother. The H then rejects the idea of having the baby and wants the h to have an abortion. The h refuses and leaves without taking any money. She gets a waitressing job to support herself and her ailing father. Things are very tough until the H accidentally finds her and is stunned to see that she is still pregnant. I must say I didn't like him very much at that point and although I understand he was grieving for his late wife, he still had responsibilities towards the h and his unborn child.

The story is pretty short and we do get our hea but in my opinion it all happens pretty soon after the H loses his wife (less than a year).

I have read other books by this author and enjoyed them immensely; however, I haven't read her for quite some time. I found the topic interesting and the characters well-developed and varied. Ms. Browning's style of writing is clear and makes one want to see around the corner to what's next. I look forward to reading more of her books soon.

A BEAUTIFUL ROMANCE - Ever Since Eve

EVER SINCE EVE is one of the best romances I've ever read. This was a book I couldn't put down, and the characters won me over right away. I enjoyed learning about surrogate motherhood and the emotions that the mother and adoptive parents go through. The author is clearly sensitive to difficult situations and skillfully dealt with all of them, tying up the ends in a way that was anything but predictable. EVER SINCE EVE is a well-crafted story that rang true in every way. Brava, Pamela Browning! Well done.

Human-animal studies through the lens of science fiction

I found this book to be a deeply interesting and rewarding examination of how the philosophical themes of human-animal studies have been explored in various works of science fiction.

This volume makes an interesting companion-piece to The Animal Fable in Science Fiction and Fantasy by Bruce Shaw. In that book, Shaw's focus is on examining the presence of animals in SF and how animals have been used to explore some of SF's favorite themes. In Animal Alterity, Vint's focus is more on the subject of human-animal studies (HAS). This branch of philosophy concerns itself with topics such as animal rights, the value of animal life, the nature of the human-animal divide, and more. To quote from the book's introduction:
"... there are many reasons to connect sf and HAS. Both are interested in foundational questions about the nature of human existence and sociality. Both are concerned with the construction of alterity and what it means for subjects to be thus positioned as outsiders. Both take seriously the question of what it means to communicate with a being whose embodied, communicative, emotional and cultural life--perhaps even physical environment--is radically different from our own."
And elsewhere in the introduction:
"... sf's long history of exploring questions of alterity and particularly of the boundary between human and other sentient beings--frequently explored through robot or AI characters--further positions it as uniquely suited to interrogating the human-animal boundary."

Thus, the target audience of this book may lean more toward those interested in human-animal studies than those strictly interested in science fiction. The writings of philosophers such as Jacques Derrida, Michel Foucault, and Donna Haraway figure heavily in the book, and the science fiction works discussed appear somewhat secondarily, serving to illustrate various philosophical themes and ideas.

However, Sherryl Vint is among the leading contemporary scholars of science fiction, and her knowledge of the field is encyclopedic. The short stories and novels she selects for examination range from the well-known to the obscure, but you can be sure that they were all chosen with deliberate care.

This is a scholarly book, but Vint's writing is accessible and relatively free of the jargon and convoluted sentence structure that characterizes much academic writing. It's only when she quotes passages from academics such as the above-mentioned philosophers that the reader is reminded of how self-consciously difficult and dense such writing often is.

I'd recommend this book to anyone interested in human-animal studies; and for those interested in both HAS and science fiction, it's nothing less than a must-read.

I wish I read this ten years ago. It would have saved me a lot of stress and money spent on therapy. All women should read this book. At least now even though I am in my 30s I can move forward in my life with this valuable information and prevent a lot of accidental suffering. My suffering was all self inflicted through ignorance. Please read this book and recommend it to others because I lived through some of these scenarios and the way I grew up I did not have guidance nor tools to face men. This author is like the father who helps his daughter navigate the world rather than fear it. I am thankful for his voice.

Now I get it!

Seeing a guy for 3 1/2 months- his job keep him out of town 50% of the time, I was always rationalizing his actions, when in my gut I knew he was just putting in the minimum effort to get maximum benefit for himself. This book really helped me recognize those behaviors, and gave me the confidence to take action to have the "state of the relationship" talk with him, and the courage to accept wherever it goes. I had lots of fun with him, no regrets, but at least I won't expect something that I'm never going to get.

I was married for many years and my husband died, leaving me pretty young widow at 50.
