Great overview!

I consider myself a beginner and this book really helped me get me up and running on designing web sites. Each section is to the point and doesn't assume too much, which is perfect for me. The chapters about HTML and CSS were invaluable. It could have used a chapter on designing web graphics, so I just use GRSites for that which a lot a people seem to swear by. I found going thru the book for hours, and learning new things in an enjoyable and organized way, the author definitely writes well. Great stuff!

Effective skills builder for web authors

Karl Stolley's "How To Design and Write Web Pages Today" is a good, solid introduction to fundamentals of web page authoring. It's a collection of tools and a downloadable template which, when worked through by anyone with the must fundamental personal computer experience, a good foundation of page authoring skills and items of interest.

There just aren't enough of this kind of book these days - a simple, focused guide teaching one practical computer skill. If you know someone who continually talks about wanting to get into web development someday, this is a basic skills book they should have and work through with the downloadable Rapid Prototyping Kit (a shell of pages and sheets and javascript files) which the author maintains at his website.

HTML 5 may replace some XHTML coding, but the basic principles which a reader of this book will work through will help them engage with HTML 5 or older languages.

For experienced developers: I found it useful for reviewing and updating my site template toolbox. Might work for you too.

television makeover is contemporary America's fairytale

The television makeover is contemporary America's fairytale, a feel-good story that ends with the resolution of the protagonist's problems and the inevitable "happily ever after." Or that's how the television mythmakers would like us to see it - the unappealing house transformed into the American dream home in Extreme Makeover: Home Edition, the boorish male remade into sophisticated metrosexual in Queer Eye for the Straight Guy , the ugly duckling transformed into The Swan - as stories of unhappy people changed for the better by the intervention of television networks, designers, cosmetic surgeons, exercise gurus and image consultants. Except, like fairytales, makeover television contains not-so-subtle subtexts; it is not only the lives and thoughts of the people on the shows that are reshaped, but also those of the viewers.

The women's makeover shows (The Swan, Extreme Makeover, Dr. 90210, etc.) are obvious examples. As Elizabeth Atwood Gailey points out in her essay in this collection, these shows promote an alarming female body ideal (tiny waist, large breasts, flat stomach, baby-like facial features), pathologize the normal changes in a woman's body post-childbirth so that women in their 30s and 40s are told they are supposed to recreate the body of a 20 year old, and encourage women to relate to themselves and their bodies as commodities. In another essay, Kathryn Fraser discusses how the women's makeover genre requires that "self-love... can only be achieved at the expense of self-loathing" and "the feminine self is always deficient and in need of intervention." Another essay discusses discuss how Extreme Makeover: Home Edition reinforces conservative views of the family, promotes consumerism and takes for granted that the social safety net has been removed.

Several other essays argue that makeover television reinforces the view that it is the elites of our society who are the arbiters of taste and their intervention that is needed by the working class if their lives are to be improved. This is an interesting collection providing thought-provoking insights into what is actually being made over by the television makeover. Written by academics for a largely academic audience, however, it is not an easy read, with the dense language, unfortunately, making it far less accessible than the television shows it critiques. But for those comfortable with this kind of text, it's a worthy and worthwhile collection.

About the Author
LTC(Ret.) John R. Angolia: Entered service as a Military Police­man at the end of the Korean War. Graduated from the Virginia Military Institute as a Distinguished Military Graduate in 1959. Commissioned as Regular Army Officer with assignment to the 82nd Airborne Division. Qualified as Jump Master, Senior Parachutist, Ranger and Special Forces. Holds BA in History, Master of Science, and Master of Military Arts and Science degrees. Author of numerous books dealing with various aspects of military history. Among the first RA officers assigned to the newly created Military Intelligence branch. In retirement, he and his wife travel the world in search of new adventures. He has a private museum covering all services of WWII military where he welcomes veterans, historians and collectors. Jake Powers: Jake has been a life-long student of WWII US Airborne history, specializing in research of the 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment for over 30 years. He is the Official Company Historian for Easy Company, Band of Brothers, and acted as the Historical Consultant to the HBO mini-series Band of Brothers, and documentary We Stand Alone Together. He has contributed to numerous historical publications including WWII Magazine s Band of Brothers special edition as well as several other World War II 101st Airborne related books. He has appeared as a commentator for TBS s Movies for Guys Who Like Movies. Jake lectures frequently on the subject of E Company and the 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment. Jake was the first honorary member of E Company, and has led numerous tours to the battlefields of Europe. He has recently completed a book on the photo history of E Company for Genesis Publishing. In addition to operating Band of Brothers Tours, Jake works as an executive in a major Fortune 100 company. Powers attended the University of Georgia where he majored in Business, and played football. George A. Petersen, Consultant: He was helped Bender Publi­cations during the production of military reference books over many years, most notably Jack Angolia s Army series, and Cloth Insignia of the SS. When he saw the original draft to this airborne series he immediately offered his services and resources to Bender Publishing and LTC Jack Angolia to make this series the best available on WWII U.S. airborne collectibles. Over his many years of collecting and dealing he has built a massive reference library and photo archive. Additionally, he has had numerous relationships with collectors of airborne material, various U.S. Government museums and archives, and organizations such as ASMIC (American Society of Military Insignia Collectors). Almost to a man, these contacts have resulted in access to premier private collections and archives. He has taken time from being his busy schedule at National Capital Historical Sales, Inc., of Springfeild, Virginia, and worked numerous hours on this book project plus traveling thousands of miles by plane and car to visit collectors, museums and archives. He is a U.S. Army veteran (1964-1967) and served as a light wearpons infantryman with Co. B, 1st Bn., 3rd Infantry Rgt. (The Old Guard) and a year in Vietnam (Dec. 1965-Dec. 1966) with the 765th Security Platoon at Vung Tau Army Airfield.

Very fine reference

This superbly illustrated book appears to be the first in much anticipated series on U.S. airborne forces in WWII. I would highly recommend it's purchase for those with a serious interest in this subject, especially since the publisher often prints only small numbers of these expensive collector-oriented books.
Now, however a question as to the price listed today, $ 138.00 !!!!!!????? I paid $58.75 in May, and the list price from the publisher is $94.95! What's the story with the "over sticker" price Amazon??

A wonderfully researched airborne history book, that provides the reader everything they need to understand the early years of the paratrooper. I can't wait for the next volume. This volume covers jump wings, helmets and equipment from both paratroopers as well as paramarines through World War Two.
