True Crime: Virginia: The State's Most Notorious Criminal Cases

Five Stars. This book contains a chapter on the John Kowalczyk murder case. John Kowalczyk was murdered in Northern Virginia in the early '90's. There has never been a complete book written about the case. The Washington Post, at the time of his murder, reported the involvement of some prominent people. Although considered suspects, polygraph tests cleared them, and they went on with their lives. Most were interviewed but not arrested. One person, however, with a criminal background, was arrested as a "hit man." He was sent to prison. Another person, also with a criminal background, considered to be the "hit man's" accomplice, disappeared. A year later the accomplice turned up in a shallow grave. There was an attempted suicide. Two persons formed a suicide pact and were found dead in Florida.

I am eagerly awaiting someone to write a complete book about the Kowalczyk murder. I think it is one of the most intriguing true murder mysteries to come along in a long time. The Washington Post reporters are commended for having done a fine job of reporting as that was the basis for the book, True Crime, published in 2011, but this case needs an examination in depth, possibly by one of the principal suspects or investigators in the case.

A good examination of criminal procedures and how they change across time

The author gathers information from contemporary, and where applicable, later or even current sources regarding notorious crimes taking place in Virginia from the colonial period through the shootings at Virginia Tech. After reviewing that information, each chapter concludes with insightful analysis regarding the effect of the case, or in some instances the later events resulting from the actions of the prosecution and defense during the case, on the American justice system. I enjoyed the conversational writing style that brought the reader along with the author on a "joint exploration" of the subject matter.

Interesting and well researched

Remind me not to get arrested in Virginia. This book was interesting and well researched, highlighting some horrible crimes that were committed in VA over the past 200+ years. Sadly, while there were arrests and convictions, the real perpetrators were rarely brought to justice. The "true crime" is that so many innocent people get railroaded by the judicial system. The first case was a little confusing, since it referenced a lot of people, all within the same family. But once you get past that, the other stories were fairly straight forward and entertaining. .

About the Author
Natasha has been teaching Russian to foreigners for over 20 years, first in Ukraine and then in the USA. She has a Bachelor's in Linguistics and a Master's Degree. Natasha attended a number of teaching trainings, conferences and seminars. Before her career as an author Natasha was a head teacher and observed countless lessons, giving feedback to the teachers about how to improve the lesson, as well to the students on how to benefit the most from the program. Her many years of work and experience culminated in a book series of her own - Russian Step by Step. These books are easy to follow and, at the same time, are teaching real Russian. In RSBS books students will find dialogues from everyday life, exercises to help master those dialogues, and texts to help in remembering them. The best way to keep up with things

This book is a marketing plan cleverly executed, and I fell into it, dear reader!

I first heard about it in John Mauldin's newsletter, and would not have purchased it if not for Mr Mauldin recommendation.

In hindsight, it looks to me like 'Howard Ruff' is a valuable brand (chronicles say this guy sold three million copies of the other book 'How to Prosper During the Coming Bad Years'), worth exploiting further. With this book I fear the brand has been a little bit overstretched.

Someone said that the strategies outlined in it are excellent... True, and here is why I give it a low rate: Beginners and experienced readers as well will find other, better, earlier books that tell the American tale on how to become safely prosperous o really rich (examples include: The Millionaire Next Door; Getting Rich in America and The Complete Idiot's Guide to Getting Rich). Then, if this book contains nothing new, what's its purpose? What's its value?

There are many repetitions; Ruff tells many times here and there the same stories (How he helped the crash of the Iron Curtain; why you have to have a six-month supply of food; how his newsletter, The Ruff Times, was the biggest, most influential newsletter in the known universe; and more...), which is annoying indeed, gentle reader!

Sometimes I wondered whether I bought a book or a catalogue disguised as a book.

There are several references to businesses owned by Mr Ruff himself or his relatives or his friends (sometimes he discloses he has a financial interest, sometimes he discloses he hasn't. Well, my wife is a lawyer, just in case you need one. I have no financial interest in her business.). The book keeps leading the reader to this or that product. Boy, this is 'cross-selling'! This is 'leverage'!

I recalled the tale of the fish: Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime. When I got the book I hoped I was going to learn something new on how to fish. And teachings are there, I'm not diminishing in any way the virtue of many suggestions (get out of debt, start saving...) written in this book. There's plenty of fish for sale in this book (this metaphor helps make my point, so let's not be too critical here); alas, not many new teachings.

Here's a quote from the book:

"Do not run out and execute the market recommendations in this book as soon as you read it. We have a very dynamic economy, and time can change things. Some recommendations may be good ideas for which the right time has come and gone or the propitious time has not yet arrived (...) The best way to keep up with things is to subscribe to 'The Ruff Times', which is written every three weeks, as I track all these recommendations very closely"

If I have to subscribe to "The Ruff Times" to know what to buy and when to buy it in order to make money, what's the practical use of this book after all? What's its purpose? What's its value?

Surely an Infomercial or Blatently Obvious - Don't Buy This

There are books out there which stimulate the mind or offer readers fresh ways of looking at the world and their money. This book does none of this. Please...run, don't walk...to another Amazon selection if you have any clue at all about organizing your finances. Ruff misuses financial dffinitions and glorifies the obvious. "The magic of compounding!" Wow... I'll bet you never heard that one before. He interchanges the terms "one year investment return" with "yield," which is a dangerous thing. Just because a mutual fund returned 22.7% in 2003 it does not mean that that return expectation is available today here ann now. Don't ask him to explain mean-reversion of returns, because that gets in the way of his weak quasi-thesis. Complete garbage.

I promise - if you had a chance to thumb through this book before buying it, you would never shell out a penny for it.

I'm less polite than the other reviewers. This is, pure and simple, an infomercial for his newletter, has little to no information, and you would violate sound use of your resources just buying it. Stay away!!!

About the Author

Robert Gough holds a doctorate in botany and is Professor Emeritus of Horticulture at the College of Agriculture, Montana State University. He is the author of 17 gardening books, 500 extension service publications, and articles for Fine Gardening, Country Journal, National Gardening, Zone 4, Montana Magazine, and Harrowsmith. He served as Extension Horticulturalist in Montana, hosted the popular Dr. Bob’s Northern Gardening Tips radio program for 10 years, and was a panel member on PBS’s Montana Ag Live for 15 years.  He is a Fellow of both the American Society for Horticultural Science and the North American Colleges and Teachers of Agriculture, as well as a member of the advisory board of Zone 4.

Cheryl Moore-Gough holds an M.S. in Plant Sciences from Montana State University, where she is now an adjunct assistant professor in horticulture. Cheryl has taught and coordinated the Montana Master Gardener program and has published numerous works alone and with her husband, Dr. Robert Gough, including five gardening books. She has written for Montana Magazine, Fine Gardening, American Nurseryman, and Zone 4 Magazine, and she hosts Northern Gardening Tips, which is broadcast by radio stations throughout Montana, Wyoming, and South Dakota on the Northern News Network. She has been gardening and saving seeds in Montana for 30 years.

Beautiful and well researched

The Complete Guide to Saving Seeds explains far more about how to grow garden plants and vegetables from seed than you can expect to find on the backs of the packages. It covers how to plant, how to cultivate, and how to harvest both the seeds and the vegetables or flowers that tempted you to pay for those seeds in the first place.

This book also competes effectively with Seeds of Woody Plants in North America and Seeds of Wildland Plants, the unexcelled "gold standard" reference sources compiled by the US Forest Service. The USFS books are somewhat more comprehensive in their coverage of American species, while The Complete Guide to Saving Seeds one has better presentation that will be more comfortable for newcomers to seed propagation.

Most readers will find this book educational reading that expands their horizons, though its style is encyclopedic and it lacks plot. The gardeners in your life who already have plots outside with sunshine will appreciate this book as a fascinating gift.

Incomplete guide to saving seeds.

So far I have looked up 4 different flowers common to our neighborhood and not found them O.K.-let's say maybe I don't know ALL the nicknames for them, or the latin names mostly because I am not a botanist. Merely a gardening enthusiast. Well I could look for a photo, right? Wrong. Far too few of those. I can't find a passion flower for instance. Aren't those pretty common? So now I have to search on the internet and therefore defeat the purpose ( at least part of it), of purchasing this book. I want to love this book, I was so excited to get it but am disappointed.

Vinay Dharwadker, poet, translator, and critic, teaches at the University of Oklahoma. He is the author of a book of poems entitled Sunday at the Lodi Gardens.
A.K. Ranamujan taught at the University of Chicago and at various other institutions for forty years, until his death in 1993. The author of many books, his recent publications include Second Sight, and Poems of Love and War.
