About the Author

Dale Schunk is a professor in the Department of Teacher Education and Higher Education, School of Education, The University of North Carolina at Greensboro. From 2001 to 2011 he served as Dean of the School of Education. He received his Ph.D. in Educational Psychology from Stanford University. Previously he was a faculty member at the University of Houston and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Prior to his move to UNC Greensboro in 2001 he was Head of the Department of Educational Studies at Purdue University. His research focuses on the effects of social and instructional factors on students’ cognitive processes, learning, self-regulation, and motivation, with special emphasis on the application of social cognitive theory. He teaches graduate courses in learning, motivation, and educational psychology, and undergraduate courses in foundations for learning and educational psychology. He has published over 110 articles and chapters, is author of Learning Theories: An Educational Perspective (6th edition) and (with Judith Meece and Paul Pintrich) Motivation in Education: Theories, Research, and Applications (4th edition), and has edited eight books on self-regulation and motivation. His awards include the Distinguished Service Award from the Purdue University School of Education, the Early Contributions Award in Educational Psychology from the American Psychological Association, and the Albert J. Harris Research Award from the International Reading Association. He is listed in Who’s Who in America.

This is a horrible written text book. It takes simple concepts and makes them hard to understand. The etext support cite is just as poor. It's hard to navigate and rarely works.

Good overview of the subject

The book covers many topics associated with environmental chemistry, however it is printed in black and white which makes some of the pictures and figures appear bland, and the print is a little small. or maybe not dark enough. While most of the information is accurate, there is some room for improvement however (e.g. some chemical equations are not balanced correctly, section on photochemical smog fails to mention that VOC emissions also contribute to the formation of ground level ozone). In general, this is a pretty good text for an overview of environmental chemistry.

In need of a thorough revision because it doesn't take into account the recent spelling changes and changes in usage over the past 10 and more years. The grammar summaries are well organized and useful. If you need a place to quickly look up German grammar, the second half of the book is excellent.

Great for reading Practice

The book is broken down into 20 lessons, the first 16 all include vocabulary at the onset of the lesson as well as a translation and pronunciation guide. The last 4 lessons are purely in the German, relying on what you have already learned. There are notes for all lessons explaining various points from grammar to idiomatic expressions. It also includes a good grammar and glossary at the back of the book. The one downside to this book is the dated language, much if not most of it is still useable to this day though so it is not to bad of a downside. Overall a great buy.

About the Author

Dr Peter Claus is a Senior Research Fellow in History at Pembroke College, Oxford. He has researched and written about social networks, social investigation and cultural forms in the City of London and the wider metropolis in the modern period. His particular commitmenttowidening participation and teaching strategies that use the archive as a way of enthusing students from non-traditional backgrounds has led to a more recent interest in the historical role of education and training in the development of public policy.

Dr John Marriott is Emeritus Professor of History at the University of East London, where he remains involved in the work of the Raphael Samuel History Centre. His research interests are in the nexus between London and empire in the modern era on which he has written widely. Most recently, his Beyond the Tower: a History of East London, published by Yale University Press, appeared in 2011. Last year he emigrated to Yorkshire where he is struggling to restore an early Georgian townhouse.

This book is, in my opinion, the leading authoritative textbook dealing with all important aspects legislative drafting. I would readily recommend this book as guidance to all parliamentary drafters. In addition, the book is a very useful guide to modern legal writing, generally. Professor Helen Xanthaki has done a brilliant job in editing and updating this 5th Edition.

About the Author
Samuel Reshevsky was born in Ozorkow, Poland on November 26, 1911. Most chess players reach their peak at age 30. It was Reshevsky's misfortune that he reached his peak during the World War II years, when he was probably the strongest player in the world. He played in the World Championship tournament in 1948 and in the Candidates Tournament in Zurich 1953. In both events, there were rumors and reports of collusion by the Soviets to prevent Reshevsky from winning the world championship, which he probably would have won in a fair contest. Fischer is quoted as saying that Reshevsky was the strongest player in the world and would have easily defeated World Champion Botvinnik in a match. However, Reshevsky never got the chance. There is no doubt at all that Reshevsky was the strongest USA player in his time. He won the US championship seven times, in 1936, 1938, 1940, 1941, 1942, 1946 and 1969. He started his career as the greatest child prodigy in chess history, playing nearly master strength chess when he was eight years old. He went on a tour first of Europe and then America, giving simultaneous chess exhibitions against adults and winning almost every game. As a 9-year old, his first American simultaneous exhibition was with 20 officers and cadets at the Military Academy at West Point. The photo of him playing in this exhibition is one of the most famous in chess history. He won 19 games and drew one. He toured the country and played over 1,500 games as a 9-year old in simultaneous exhibitions and only lost 8 games. He started playing again as an adult and was quickly established as one of the strongest players in the world. Having started as the world's youngest master, Reshevsky went on to become the world's oldest. After winning a game against a strong player in the US Open and when somebody remarked that he was able to win at such an advanced age. He never had a birth certificate due to war-time conditions in his native Poland. Reshevsky remained a world class player even after he had passed 60 years old. He even won a game in Moscow against Smyslov in 1991 when Reshevsky was 80 years old. He defeated Grandmaster and US Chess Champion Larry Christiansen just a few months before he died. He died on April 4, 1992 in New York City at age 81.

Great insights into chess masters

The title is a little misleading: probably more accurate would be "Serious Mistakes in Grandmaster Play" ... or something along these lines. But Reshevsky probably did not want it to sound as if he were appealing to supermarket-tabloid taste. At any rate, some of the games are between grandmasters of about equal strength ... so regardless of who won, it was not an upset ... though perhaps the means were surprising.
The format of the book is that of seventeen chapters in which the worst mistakes in serious play of seventeen grandmasters are examined. These mistakes range from rather subtle ones ... which might simply have been an attempt to surprise, or "out-psyche," the opponent. Others are egregious blunders, and truly surprising. These are more in the nature of windows into the fragile nature of human mind than reflections on the player ... but are nevertheless interesting.
Reshevsky also provides an analysis of each player. Sometimes these are quite opinionated; or perhaps I should say quite strongly worded, though perhaps on the mark. One of the chapters covers the author himself. That chapter and the comments on the other players reveal quite a bit about Reshevsky.

There is no question that Reshevsky was a child prodigy who went on to become a top-notch grandmaster as an adult. The same is true of Capablanca. But one cannot escape a feeling that both players did not quite live up to their potential in the later part of their careers. (Capablanca by losing his crown so soon, as well as his declining performance in tournaments after that. Reshevsky by never becoming the official challenger for the world title, though he got close.) Is this coincidence? I am inclined to think not. I think both men realized that giving chess "their all" would hurt their personalities. I have a half-backed theory that overly concentrating on chess results in a "rewiring" of the brain which tends to distort the personality. I have Bobby Fischer in mind; but also Morphy, von Bardeleben, Nimzovich, and maybe even Alekhine.

Upsets??

After having been reading this book several times, I felt something wrong with the title. Then I read the column Evans On Chess in Chess Life, issue Jan/Feb 2001, I agreed with them. Many games in this books can hardly be the upsets. GM lost to GM; Champion vs Challenger's games can't be graded as such. Usually, a strong player losing to a much weaker player or the player with substantial advantage blowing the game (Reshevsky's own game, page 180) could be put in this catergory. Anyway there are many good games in this book; and the lesson here is even the champions can make mistake too.
Reshevsky, Korchnoy and Larsen are in the book; but Nimzowitch, Euwe, Geller, and Bronstein (one of my mentor) are NOT!!!
Another interesting point GM Larry Evans showed was the game between Euwe-Alekhine on pages 78 and 91 are identical but with some slightly different notes.

I wouldn't have had the courage to pick and eat the mushrooms growing under my ash tree (Boletinellus merulioides) without this guide. If it is growing in Texas, it's in this book.

I have several 1st edition books autograph(sarcastically by Susan) although It was not my Hobby.... I went along on the forays!!!! Jim Loved it!! ( My Husband.....RIP..)
When I called Susan in the mist of my pain to let her know Jim had passed at 55 yrs old..... She said, Good Riddance..... I still recommend the Book As a Wonderful guide. Susan, after 9 years your response is the only one I remember as cold and heartless.
