Beautiful man, but a near prudish book

In this day and age, with the abundance of books showing the male figure, I'm surprised, and frankly disappointed, that this book contains no full frontal nudity. Early in the book Gandy compares himself to the David by Michelangelo and then you see him standing in a similar pose, with his genitalia fully blacked out. It looks ridiculous. What's the hangup? I"m not asking for pornography, but at least an honest presentation. I would prefer a fig leaf to the black void in this particular photograph.

He's a beautiful man, I like the casual writing of the book but the prudish, puritan almost, nature of the photo selection is disappointing.

The runway shots are predictable and the Klein group shots are boring. The paparazzi shots are unnecessary, why in red?

I have never paid this much for a book, but I feel it was worth the investment. The book is HUGE and the images are BEAUTIFUL. If you are a fan of David Gandy, Mariano Vivanco or just appreciate the beauty of the male form, you will enjoy this book.

I purchased this hardcover book without batting an eyelash, and I don't care how much it cost either!!! great photography and great profile !! I knew that all of this proceeds will go to his charities as he mention in one article I read. I'm a great fan of his and I even get an invite to see him walk a ramp one time when he visited manila!!! I love his blog too, very charming and witty!!

Beware! If you are after music analysis, you won't find much in this book.

This book is exactly what it says: music for analysis -- not music analysis.

Lots of bits and pieces of scores with pertinent questions here and there.
But no discourse about music analysis.

Typically the kind of book I would never have bought if I had been in a bookshop and able to quickly flip through the pages.

A MUST read if you are heading for the Cooks!

We just got back from a two week exploration of the Cooks and found this book VERY helpful. The Cooks will quickly convince you that if you've only been to Hawaii, you've only gone half way to Heaven!
Unfortunately, we required hospital services (because of tainted food), and this book over simplifies issues of needed medical care. (Details that should be included in EVERY travel guide!)
Naturally, most prices quoted are actually higher, but that's just dealing with reality.
We observed "newbies" arriving without this book, and therefore, without a clue of where to go or what to do.
FOUR Stars because this book was so valuable, but as with most, there is room for improvement.

About the Author

Neil Lerner is Associate Professor of Music at Davidson College, with his Ph.D. in Musicology from Duke University. He has several published articles and numerous conference presentations to his credit, including co-authorship on our book with Joseph Straus, Sounding Off: Theorizing Disability in Music. Moreover, he is an active teacher of Film Music and carries a full load, teaching the curricula for general liberal arts students as well as required courses for music majors.

Valuable for Film Composers, Arrangers as well as Soundtrack Fans

The essays divide roughly between those that describe music in technical terms - including brief, single-staff or short score excerpts - and others which stick strictly to text.

Julie Brown’s opening essay on the role of the organ and organ music in ‘Carnival of Souls’ is a wonderful opening and ‘table-setter’ for the rest of the collection.

The pivotal ideas of Brown’s essay is the ambiguity of music that functions on one hand for the benefit of the film audience as part of the film’s ‘geography’, yet at certain pivotal moments, that same music may or may not be heard in real-time by the actors as an integral element of the story. If you know the film it’s a powerful realization. The other fascinating topic is the organ's role in (at least classic era) horror film, both symbolic and musical. We take it for granted as almost a cliche of the past, but the historical associations and ramifications are surprisingly rich.

The most interesting essay from a musical/analytical perspective is Janet K. Halfyard’s ‘Mischief Afoot’ where she illustrates the use of tritones, chromatic modulations and paradisiac techniques by film composers such as Elfman, Goldstein, etc...

Halfyard uses one or two system staves to illustrate themes and harmonic passages and the mix of bite-size analysis and thoughtful text is perfect for this context. I was so impressed I picked up a copy of her full-length analysis of Elfman’s Batman score, which I also recommend to musicians in search of film music insight.

Other essays deal with music as an element of film/cultural criticism which I found equally interesting for various reasons. Many films mentioned are from the 60's-80's - perhaps reflecting the generational bias of the writers – but those also happen to be my own biases so it’s not a problem!

Rather than a hodgepodge of topics, there appears to be a conscious effort to meld a cohesive set of themes. The editor has wisely cross referenced many essays throughout the book, lending a welcome continuity not always found in such collections.

I wholeheartedly recommend the book to aspiring film composers looking less for production tips than perhaps for an historical aesthetic along with some vivid and ‘lightly technical’ advice.

One criticism of the book I have is unfortunately the term ‘atonal’ is bandied-about in a misleading fashion when ‘dissonant’ and ‘excessively chromatic’ would have been more appropriate. ‘Atonal’ opens up a huge can of worms depending on who you’re speaking to but composers and musicians who appreciate the distinction might bristle at the casual usage.

never thought I could enjoy a book on music, but I love horror, so I'd give it a try. turns out it was a pretty good read and taught me something about music in horror cinema. 10/10 would read again

Hollywood producer Lynda Obst (Flashdance, Sleepless in Seattle) recounts her own battles in Hollywood's trenches--from her beginnings as a journalist to her current role as the maker and breaker of careers. Like other "classic" Hollywood books--Hollywood Babylon by Kenneth Anger and You'll Never Eat Lunch in This Town Again by Julia Phillips--Hello, He Lied is saturated with sleaze and proves, once again, that most of Tinseltown's stars are seriously lacking in the upstairs department.

In her first book, movie producer and former New York Times Magazine editor Obst creates a peculiarly Hollywood kind of hybrid, a memoir/survival guide that describes what it's really like to get a movie made while still managing to say something nice?or at least benevolently neutral?about everybody in power. Obst left a dream job at the good gray Times to become a "development girl" (scouting material and overseeing script writes) for hyper-ambitious studio head Peter Guber. From Guber she learned that success means never going to a meeting (or doing anything) without a strategy. Her strategy here is to portray herself at work, describing how she has learned to handle tough situations and tough people. Thus, supermogul David Geffen, who once mused during a meeting that she should consider collagen shots, is praised for his personal manager-like interest in his employees' lives. Obst distills her experience into a coda for survival. She knows not to buck major trends ("Ride the Horse in the Direction Its Going," reads one chapter title). She knows when to put projects on the back burner ("Putting It on the Roof"). Above all, she understands the "Tao of Power," as explained in a chapter that reads like a contemporary Hollywood version of The Art of War: "The secret that all powerful people know is that no one else gives you power.... With power, there is no permission to be granted. Permission must be seized." At times, the writing is awkward: "The latent energy that makes imploding friendships so dangerous is the fact they are playlets of this familial struggle." But there are gems in the gravel. Obst's rundown of the difference between an arty "fuzzy girl" as opposed to an Armani-wearing "crisp girl" is worth the price of admission. Photos not seen by PW.

The title reveals Obst's success producing Hollywood films?part adolescent aggression (Hey, you idiot!) and part practical philosophy (lies can be truths). Writing in a breezy, readable style, she frankly steps through the ups and downs of her "high-stakes career" producing Sleepless in Seattle, Flashdance, and The Fisher King. Many bulleted lists ("tips on moguls") punctuate chapters titled "Never Go to a Meeting Without a Strategy," "The Tao of Power," and "My New Best Friend." And she does not shrink from telling a story about herself, particularly if it flatters one of her many powerful mentors. Obviously a sharp, well-read, and industrious worker, Obst has produced a book that is unfortunately short on details about the art of producing and long on sensible advice useful no matter what career you pursue. Primarily for those into Hollywood "wisdom," this book also substitutes as a popular psychology lesson in interpersonal politics. For larger public libraries and where there is demand.?Jane E. Interesting at first...

There are many reasons you might want to read this book, and it serves some needs well. I bought a used copy and it was apparent that others had lost interest partway through.
You think you want to be a Hollywood producer? This book might be for you: the author worked her way up partway (she was, after all, listed as a producer on Interstellar) and has some amusing examples of conversations with footnotes as to the true motives behind the words. She also provides useful rules for various aspects of the business. In fact, these may be the true value of this work, as these rules are applicable well beyond the craziness of Hollywood. She also provides useful information for women in business, where there is plenty of room for improvement. Also in academe.
If you are reading this for insights into individuals, it may be less useful, as it was published in 1996.
If you are a wannabe writer, director, agent or studio mogul, reading this or anything else will not help.
Towards the end it gets a bit self-serving, as others have noted.

About the Author

Eric Jensen is a former teacher and current member of the Society for Neuroscience and New York Academy of Sciences. He has taught at all levels, from elementary through university level and is currently completing his PhD in human development. In 1981, Jensen cofounded SuperCamp, the nation’s first and largest brain-compatible learning program, now with over 50,000 graduates. He has since written Teaching with the Brain in Mind, Brain-Based Learning, Deeper Learning, Arts with the Brain in Mind, Enriching the Brain, and 21 other books on learning and the brain. A leader in the brain-based movement, Jensen has made over 45 visits to neuroscience labs and interacts with countless neuroscientists. He was the founder of the Learning Brain EXPO and has trained educators and trainers for 25 years worldwide in this field. He is deeply committed to making a positive, significant, lasting difference in the way we learn.

Be an informed educator

This book is compiled from the online "learningbrain" monthly newsletter, which gives the latest and timely research articles pertinent to education. The book covers a similar format in 10 areas: cognition, environments, achievement and test performance, music/arts, memory, mind/body, nutrition, enrichment, early years, and the fragile brain. Each article gives a succinct summary of the issues based on research data, "Action Steps" and sources. There are just too many interesting and relevant topics. A few examples: "Is Chocolate Good for Learning?", "The 'Mozart Effect' Under Fire: Where Do We Go From Here?", "Why Some Learners Strive on Stress?", "Learning a New Language in Early Childhood Requires Less Brain Effort", "Neuroplasticity: How Do We Change Our Brain?', "The Biology of Cheating"... There are many passages that you wish to quote and teach the students. Teachers and school administrators can also make better decisions based on reliable information supplied by the book.

Compared to Jensen's other books with even more illustrations, I hope this book could be improved in the next edition. E.g., can you make sense of the following? "Research suggests that fonts with serifs (referring to the short lines stemming at an angle from the upper and lower ends of the stroke of a letter) increase reading speed rates when compared to sans serif fonts (without seifs)." (p. 10) A sketch of the anatomy of the brain would help for visualising many terms throughout the book. E.g. in "Gender Differences and Learning Performance", unless you have some background already, it would be hard to know what is being compared (pp. 69-71). Of course you can start with other introductory books first. Overall, this is a very valuable and interesting book for all educators.

Teaching Kids To Learn Smarter !!

This is an excellent resource, and while primarily written for the elementary or secondary school teacher, there are plenty of suggestions and scenarios for parents too. The book focuses on what can be done to encourage smart learning. There is some mention of the research, but again, the focus is on the "how" and not as much on the "why". It does not try to be a book on the psychology of learning, but a how-to book to improvement in learning.

Experienced teachers will find themselves agreeing with many of the points made in the book, but there are quitely likely additional techniques and strategies to incorporate into your everyday toolbox. For the younger teacher, this is an excellent way to add a few more years of experience under your belt, with very much less effort.

I most heartily suggest this, but more importantly share this information with your colleagues. No man is an island, and it is not very effective to be the only one teaching: "learning smarter".
